Terrifying Day
Hi all, I would like to share a story with you, a person who has been a source of inspiration to each and everyone of our family member.
She is (was rather, she is no more) my grandmama. She was an affectionate woman who could win over anyone with her undying love, no matter what. Let me narrate to you, the story of her life, the trauma that no woman should ever undergo!
She was the eldest of a family of 7 girls and 1 boy. Of these, 2 children died shortly after birth. Right now, only 2 of them are alive.
At the age of 16, my grandma got married as a second wife to a 40 year old man. She lost her husband 1 year after her wedding. By God’s grace she had a son whom she considered a solace. But that didn’t last, as the son passed away shortly too! Ultimately, by the age of 25 she lost her entire family! Nevertheless, she then dedicated her life towards the upbringing of each and every child in the family. This was the reason she was loved and respected by everyone in our family.
Last year, by this same time, my marriage was fixed. Being the oldest grandchild in my family, she was very happy and said she would bring up my kid too! I was in tears and said of course you will have to! Shortly before my engagement, she had a fall one night when sleeping. It left her right hand fractured. There began all the trouble. She was 83 years old by then.
At my engagement function, all she could do was sit quietly in one place. It was a hard hitting reality for all of us since we got used to seeing her doing the entire household chores all by herself!
There was hardly a month left for my wedding. She developed a strange mental depression since that time, imagining things, fearing death, longing to see my wedding and the like. All of us assured her that she would be the first person to bless me at my wedding. But nature is inevitable as we all know.
She was admitted in the ICU for nearly 20 days. All day we would stay at the hospital, praying for her. One fine day it

When I think about someone who seems to fit this bill, only one person comes to mind, my grandmother of 69 years of age. I am an eyewitness to the love and sacrifice exuded by her on the day to day through her unconditional willingness to help others and her desire to spend quality time with them. However, my knowledge of the way my grandma lived her life prior to me being born is very limited and with her only growing older and older, the story of her life is slowly fading further into oblivion. This is my attempt to remember her while she is still with us. This is the story of my grandmother, Mary Kay Amodo.…

I have left for extended periods for professional or academic ventures in the past but Vanessa and I both are deeply rooted in my parent’s home. Between December of 2008 and July of 2009 Vanessa lost a grandmother, two great grandmothers and a great grandfather. She was blessed with seven years of her life in which she was able to get to know the generation of people that she had come from. In 2005 her father moved in with his elderly mother and grandmother after his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer; shortly thereafter my maternal grandfather began to rapidly deteriorate, physically and mentally, at which time he moved in with us. Vanessa gained a great respect for the elderly as well as life experiences and knowledge one can only gain by exposure to older generations; however, these blessings came with lessons in illness and death and the real life challenge of coping with the sadness of end of life deterioration and the loss of loved ones. Vanessa understood that death was the inevitable end to life in the flesh, but she also understood that her loved ones were starting a new life in heaven. Instead of displaying exclusively classic signs of grief that would normally be seen in a child her age under the circumstances, she approached coping with a bitter sweet perspective that…

That was the moment when my grandmother’s world came crashing down right before her eyes. The next months were very hard for my mom, Jill, my grandfather, and especially my grandmother. My grandmother had to stay calm and not act worried around her daughter. She prayed to God every day to make everything better and with the support of family and friends everything would turn out to be okay. After a few hard months the doctors told her that the brain tumor…

Even to this day, I don't know how my grandma had so much love for someone who she could barely remember. Yet, since my grandma's condition was bad I naturally helped out my family with my great grandma. I would bring in and out sodas for her since she had a mad addiction to the fizzy drink, and sometimes I would bring her hot meals. Even though doing all of that was great, my favorite thing to do for her was to keep her company. On the most beautiful of days, we would go out and sit on the neon yellow swing set in front of our house in early afternoons when the leaves were turning a beautiful shade of brown and the weather was just the right temperature. The wind sang alluring songs in your ears as the branches of the lush trees danced to the melody. I can picture it just like it was yesterday. The pond next to us glimmered a light blue color as the swing squeaked in glee. She would sing the same tune each time and i would drift into a world of peace and tranquility where nothing else mattered at that moment. But as a little girl, I took those special moments for granted. I was too oblivious to know that good things don't last forever, they never…

Her grandmother and I took her to the doctor to try to help her. The doctor did a couple of tests, and a month later we found that she was diagnosed with cancer. Jamilex's grandmother and I didn't want to tell Jamilex because we felt it was going to make things worse. Three months had already passed form Jamilex's mothers death and it felt as if it was just yesterday. Jamilex was so depressed that she began to believe that she wasn't worth anything and that her life didn't make any sense anymore. That's when Jamilex tried to commit suicide. She tried to hang her self, drank Clorox and intoxicated her self with pills; luckily we were able to prevent her death by taking her to the hospital and taking her to counseling sessions. Her Grandmother then decided to be with her at all times, wherever she went, her grandmother would follow her even into the bathroom, the kitchen, or her room. It was hard for me try to help her and make her feel better when at the same time I was depressed just seeing her. But I had to remember to be strong and to show her that life is beautiful. I would try to take her out to the park so she could remember the good memories we had…

That summer, June 15, was her surgery. I remember the day so clearly. I was sitting in a waiting room, hoping everything was going well. It was the longest day for everybody. Seven hours later, she was out of surgery. The surgery went well and her only problem was temporary paralysis. As bad as that seemed, I was so glad that she would become healthy again. I visited her everyday and even stayed over at the hospital a few nights.…

I'm so nervous and worried but they called us into the room to get her ready for the surgery. My little baby girl didn't know what was about to happen. My heart was falling apart to see her so small and having to experience this. They finally take her in so I tell her how much I love her and cry. After seven hours of waiting, they call me and tell me that the surgery was over and I could go in to intensive care to see her. That moment was the worst seeing her in so much pain. She passed out on me twice and doctors were so concerned of her reaction. Being there for a month wondering if she was going to make it or not is something I don't wish no one will ever have to go through. But my little angel, my warrior, fought so hard, she overcame it and we left the hospital on January 29th making our way back to El Paso,…
