of fine silver, and has three separate parts: the snowflake, the annulus, and the maple leaf. In addition, the colour red is added manually through an application involving opaque and translucent enamel. The history of this medal dates back to 1967, credited to Bruce Beatty, C.M, S.O.M., and C.D.
On June 28, 1981, Terrance Stanley Fox became the youngest person to receive the Companion Order of Canada medal (The Terry Fox Foundation). This medal recognized his outstanding achievements and his dedication to his community and his service to the nation. Through his commitments towards cancer research and cancer awareness, over 700 million dollars has been raised in his name. He raised awareness about cancer, and also raised money which resulted in advancements in imaging technology, increased life expectancy for men with stage prostate cancer, and advances in early screening techniques among many others. Through his Marathon of Hope, Terry Fox encouraged millions of Canadians to participate in his annual runs, donate to a good cause, and inform others about cancer.
