INTRODUCTION TO TESCO
Tesco is one of the world's leading international retailers with over 3000 stores worldwide. It has expanded significantly since the mid 1920s and is currently the market leader in 5 countries. Over the last 5 years Tesco’s profits have doubled from approximately 1 billion to over 2 billion pounds. They are the first UK retailer to unveil annual profits of more than £2bn.
Tesco’s long term strategy for growth is to continue it’s development in the Core UK, expand by growing internationally, to be as strong in non-food as in food and to continue to follow customers into new retailing services.
Tesco employs over 400,000 people in its businesses around the world and aims to deliver a consistently strong customer offer on every visit and every transaction by focusing on the group's core purpose: to create value for customers to earn their lifetime loyalty.
Tesco's Board comprises six Executive Directors and seven independent Non-Executive Directors, in addition to the Non-executive Chairman. The chief executive is Sir Terry Leahy. The International and IT director is Philip Clarke.

THE TECHNOLOGY FUNCTION
Technology underpins all aspects of the Tesco business; food, non-food, telecoms, finance and so forth. The technology function at Tesco is not just hardware and
