Objectives
Thematic units offer critical thinking, discussion and activities of a topic for students. The objectives are placed on each chapter and lesson, which means they are specifically designed for different contents.
Principles
Edge is designed to motivate students by high-interest, multicultural literature selections including fiction and nonfiction.
Population
The curriculum is designed for high school students who have not mastered their level of reading, writing, and language skills. And this level B aims at Grade5-7. This includes English Language Learners, as well as Special Education students who are native English speakers but lower in reading.
Organization
Chapter titles and subheadings indicate the information and clearly to follow. Contents of the chapters are presented and outlined at the beginning of the book and there is an Essential Question begins the chapter.
Tasks
Each chapter has short stories for further reading and contains study guides, summaries and some special features to help review the major concepts during reading. Students can use supplemental materials like workshops to practice a skill or their knowledge.
Content
Edge contains seven chapters presenting varieties of informational, persuasive and functional reading. Questions in the chapters stimulate students to think critically, draw connections across ideas, and some apply to students’ interests and experiences in their daily life.
