This essay will outline the recent history of national legislative changes affecting English-language teaching and identify the current operating policy and include a description of my education sector and learners. Following this description will be a detailed analysis of how the policy has been implemented in the public FE sector and especially within my own organisation. The analysis will begin by examining funding issues that affect the implementation, followed by a point-by-point discussion of positive benefits as well as negative impacts of each aspect. Both pre-existing and pending funding changes which impact ESOL provision will also be briefly mentioned.…

English for Specific Purpose (ESP), nowadays, it is being discussed highly popular and even applied in a variety of learning institutions. If it is seen from the increasing public interest, we would think that the opportunity to become an ESP teacher is great. Nunan (1989:54) notice that “a rule of thumb for authentic here is any material which has not been specifically produced for the purpose of language teaching”.…

It is a common assertion that materials in general play a crucial part in language learning (Robinson, 1991; Nunan, 1991). This accounts for the fact that discussions of the roles of materials appear in almost all books on course design. Materials not only provide learners with a wide range of useful and fascinating information but also can play a part in enhancing learners’ motivation- thus, facilitate their acquisition (Dudley- Evans& St John, 1998; Nonaka, 2001).…

    Evaluation a Course Book

Selecting a course book is an important task for any English language teacher or evaluator. Cunningsworth (1984) observes that few English language teachers do not depend on a course book. For this reason, “the selection of materials probably represents the single most important decision that the language teacher has to make” (Hutchinson, 1987, p. 37). It is very important that the teacher has the capacity to evaluate any course book in order to choose the most effective and suitable one (McDonough and Shaw, 1993; Littlejohn and Windeatt, 1988). According to Cunningsworth (1985, p. 14), the purpose of an evaluation is to investigate the strong and weak points in specific material. However, the teacher can adapt the weak points of the text and develop them according to her/his students’ needs. This paper will identify a set of criteria for the evaluation and adaptation of an English Language Teaching (ELT) course book before using these criteria to analyse and evaluate two specific parts of the Inside Out course book, the contents page and Unit 10.…

    Esp Course Design

Spring 2006 Week 3 - ESP Chapters 2 and 3 & Ellis & Johnson (1994), PART ONE, pp. 3-39 - Answers 1. What are the four stages of ESP? The development of ESP as a specific approach in English Language Teaching (ELT) is the result of four basic stages. The approach which we now call ESP developed as a direct result of developments in these different areas listed below. In the same vein, ESP is reliant on using the same types of analysis. When developing and ultimately conducting in ESP course the designer needs to go through and make a thorough analysis using all these different considerations. Register Analysis The basic idea behind register analysis is something that we already talked about in class last week, namely, that in different situations people will shift into different registers. This is the basic idea and it is an idea which has been around since the 1960s. At the time researchers began to become more interested in social aspects of language and what they found was that a single individual in the course of a day would change the way they spoke many, many different times. In fact every time these test subjects entered a new situation their language would change to better suit the situation in which they now found themselves. Register analysis is a study of such changes. Now in the course of investigating is what researchers also found was that many of these changes were related to occupations or, in a more general sense, actions. It is important to remember that actions don’t occur individually but occur with groups so groups to a certain extent are defined by the actions they take or engage in together. An important indicator membership in any group would be the ability to shift your register into the group approved register. This means that different groups are going to use obviously different…

The teaching profession has historically used different names for these two teaching situations; however, the more generic term teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) is increasingly used to describe the profession. Both native speakers and non-native speakers successfully train to be English language teachers. The use of these various terms has led to confusion about the training options for both prospective students and for employers. Because there is no global standard for the training of English language teacher, it is important to look beyond the actual acronym/title to the components of the training program.…
