Abstract
Texas Tech University is a teaching and research institution that offers bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees in numerous disciplines. It is located in Lubbock, Texas and was founded in 1923. Texas Tech has an enrollment of approximately 30,000 students and there are an estimated 9,000 full-time employees, which includes faculty and staff (J. Billingsley, personal communication, February 2013). In addition, there are roughly 4,000 part-time employees. Texas Tech is a large, public university and is part of the University of Texas system and the mission statement of the university is as follows: “As a public research university, Texas Tech advances knowledge through innovative and creative teaching, research and scholarship. The university is dedicated to student success by preparing learners to be ethical leaders for a diverse and globally competitive workforce. The university is committed to enhancing the cultural and economic development of the state, nation and world.”

The laissez-faire style lacks direct supervision of employees and fails to provide regular feedback to those under their supervision.
