The author of each text has a specific way that the information is organized for the reader to understand what is happening. The author has a specific way of communicating the story to go along with the structure. For example a chronological order is organized from one point in time to another it goes in a specific order using time. Another example is problem and solution which is where a problem is presented and a solution comes about where it can be one or a few solutions. Collectively part of the Common Core State Standards it states Under craft and structure students it states "Describe the overall structure (e.g., chronology, comparison, cause/effect, problem/solution) of events, ideas, concepts, or information in a text or part of a text" Educators need to teach students about the structures of text to further help with comprehension. When someone is able to understand the structure they will be able to smoothly read the text. Every genre has a different way of presenting information the author makes the choice based on what the story is about on how to compile the information together in order for the reader to fully comprehend the text. Similarities between text complexity and text structure involve the fact that each piece involves reading. Students today need to be challenged in a way that they are forced to thinking outside of the box not on the surface. Text complexity allows educators to prepare the right material and for students to dive into the text. Students need to not only know the level of difficulty of a text to be able to see if the book is right for them but to know about text structure and the way that the author sets it up to be able to comprehend the text. Not having text structure there would not be text complexity because they both function with and without each other. Furthermore having the ability to understand the information will allow students to further their understanding and pick the right book for the given assignment. Reading can be fun and students can relate their own life experience to them they just need the opportunity to be engaged in the right kind of text.
