Texting Addiction Essay
Teen Texting In today’s world there are many forms of communication. There is Email, phone calls, television, radio, newspaper, etc. These forms of communication are very helpful but, is it possible for something as simple as communication to rule over your entire life? It is possible, it’s called texting. Texting addiction is now a common thing. What started off as just a way to help us communicate to others is now infecting our minds. Texting can reduce human interaction and can make people become sort of strange or maybe even somewhat socially awkward. Even though texting can cause this, cell phones can actually be very useful. You just need to watch yourself and make sure you don’t spend too much time staring at that bright little screen. From an article on KSL Jed Boal said: 63 percent women and 73 percent of men ages 18-34 said they can’t go an hour without checking their phones.” This is obviously a texting addiction. Some of my friends say that they think their phone vibrates in their pocket when it really doesn’t because they are so used to their phone going off all the time and they don’t feel the same without having their phone out. Some just find it hard to complete daily tasks because they feel like they always need to have their phone out. Some might even feel obliged to reply to a text immediately. “Study shows that many will break the law and rules of etiquette to stay connected. 24 percent said they check their phones while driving. 9 percent said they check their phones during religious services at a house of worship. 30 percent admit they check their phones during meals with others.” (Jed Boal) I am not saying that I have never done any of that but honestly, that is very improper and rude. It makes everybody else that you are with feel like they being excluded and that you don’t even care that they are there. Human interaction is very important, especially with the growing ways to communicate. Kate D. Anderson said that teen texting is a ruin of romance. I agree, there are so many teens that ask each other out or over the phone. I think that important things like this should be done face to face. “It’s like a tennis ball, he texts, and then I text back, and it goes on like this all the time. Back and forth. Back and forth.”(Kate D. Anderson) This is saying that a texting conversation never stops when you text every day. This is a terrible thing; there is no freedom at all with this. It makes you feel like you have to text that person back and tell them everything that you are doing and how you are doing. This leads to absolutely zero conversation when you see the person face to face. You will have nothing to tell them when you actually see them. This can make someone a horrible communicator. Talking over text is so much easier than face to face. This can most definitely ruin relationships by making both people sick of each other or even socially awkward. Although texting can be bad, it can also be good. Cell phones are a very good way to communicate and spread news or events. There are many benefits of phones like instant messaging, GPS, Email, you can even do most of your work straight from your phone. My dad barely even has to use his computer because his phone can do everything he needs. That is very useful. Cell phones can also be very good if there is an emergency or you need to get in touch with someone very quickly. Cell phones, like everything else, have their pros and cons. So in conclusion, cell phones can help in many ways and are very useful. Even though they are a very good way to stay connected, they can be bad. We as people just need to be careful how much time we spend on our phones. If we do this, our society will be a lot more outgoing and better for everyone. Just remember that there are other things going on outside of your cellphone. Let’s all wake up to the real world.

Since the use of texting and social media has become more normal, people are beginning to spend their time on their phones as opposed to interacting with their peers. When it comes to texting, there’s not too much pressure. You can take your time and think carefully about what you’re gonna say before you send it. On the phone it’s different; there’s pressure to say the right thing and to keep the conversation going. It’s also time consuming, “it demands their full attention when they don’t want to give it” (Birkenstein, Durst, and Graff 375). Phone calls seem to require a certain amount of time and commitment, something people seem to have neither of, and that’s why people would rather send a quick text or email than take time out of their busy day to take a call. Staying behind your screen also offers a protection that phone calls don’t. “It’s only on the screen that shy people open up,” Elaine, a teen that Turkle interviewed explains (Birkenstein et al. 373). “It’s a place to hide” (Birkenstein et al. 347). However there’s a danger that comes with that way of thinking; hiding behind social media causes damage to your psyche. In his article, The Dangers of Social Media for the Psyche, David Brunskill warns…

In this manner, Robin Mejia, author of “How Texting Changes the Way Kids Communicate” explains how the pros out outweigh the cons in the way kids communicate using technology. Mejia goes on to explain that it is safer in today’s society because kids spend most of their time online talking to their friends in real life opposed to a potential predator. She also writes about how the technology today lets the parents themselves communicate easier with their kids while they carry their busy work schedule. Lastly, she believes that the kids are able to sustain friendships better and that a lot of the communicating is positive between the kids and their peers. Studies show that 76% of youth today are texting 8-10 hours a day non-stop. This is true. As a matter of fact one day I was walking down the halls of opry mills mall and I saw this group of probably seven or eight girls. And you know when you pass a group of girls you expect there to be a lot of noise. Well in this case, when they passed I didn’t hear a single word. They were all not even paying attention to where they were going and looking down at their phones texting. I mean, what is the point in going to the mall with your friends if you are not going to even talk to each other. Now I hope this generation has not gotten so lazy to the point where they don’t even want to talk and let the phones do it for them. The thing that makes texting so popular is the fact that you can do it anywhere and anytime. The key word is “instant”. That is obviously what this generation is all about. Most people have become so used to texting that they can literally do it without even looking at the phone. They don’t even have to think about it, it just happens. That is the problem with this generation, we don’t…

In his article “When Texting Is Wrong” regarding the ethics of texting, Randy Cohen presents the argument that young people in the status quo never consented to be a part of a culture that encourages constant communication through casual texting and that there is substantial harm that stems from this passive participation in and acceptance of inappropriate texting. Cohen goes on to cite various examples in which he feels texting was inappropriate and possibly harmful i.e. in the midst of a conversation, an embrace, or a surgical procedure. He cites some real life examples in which texting has been harmful due to either texting while operating motor vehicles or being ostracized for texting at inopportune times. Cohen does make the point that…

Her mom asked her to go to the store and grab a gallon of milk, her phone went off, and she was tempted to pick it up and read what it said, she thought to herself “it's just a small text, what’s the worst that could happen." Little did she know the car in the next lane ahead of her was swerving and would end up hitting her because she didn't notice the vehicle, why? All because of the small text she was reading and or sending back. If she wouldn't have picked up the phone to read the text, she could've avoided the swerving car and not got hit. We all know the times we are in the car, and our phones go off, and we are tempted to pick them up and check them or send a simple text back maybe even take that quick phone call. But little do we know how big of a distraction that is and the lives we put in…

Another issue is peer pressure. Especially in teenagers, texting has become the new cool thing to do. Fitting in and having trends sadly becomes the only thing important in some teenagers lives. Keeping in touch and texting each other consumes their time and becomes a sole priority. Being a teenager myself I can relate to many of these issues. I personally have heard peers say they text and drive solely because they don’t want to be told what to do. It’s a rebellious action; texting while driving is now illegal and you will receive a fine if caught doing so. This same cause goes back to carelessness and lack of respect for the people among you.…

Talking on the phone is so old school. Most teens today prefer texting. About 75 percent of 12- to 17-year-olds in the United States own cellphones, and 75 percent of these teens send text messages, according to the Pew Research Center's Pew 2010 Internet and American Life Project. More than half of these teens text daily. With texting outpacing other forms of communication, you have to wonder how this technology shift alters the social lives and behavior of today's teens.…

Some teenagers believe that with the text message communication, enables them to express their feelings freely and sincerely to someone. This is why they like to be "plugged-in" with it all day long. I think that it depends on each person when considering if cellphone messaging is a kind of slavery or freedom because I belief in free will, therefore each of us have the choice of doing it or not. There are times when it's good, to ask for homework, to reach you in an mall, on a bus, at the theatre, or to call your mom so that she can pick you up from someplace. The "important thing" may be to know when to leave the cellphone or pager at home. Unfortunately, for some people, the fact that these things exist creates the expectation that they'll always use them. People need time away from work, time to be with their families, or with their cats, time to study, or just time to be alone. Many teenagers are forgetting that, and technology is making it too easy for them to do so. And yet, in the end I think it is a good thing, because an instant text message is less intrusive than a phone call. Anyone can send you a message, but you only have to deal with those that matter. That's better than the cell phone, which more or less forces you to answer without knowing if the call is important or not. But, instant text messaging isn't so…
