Texting and Driving Katelyn DeRiso Persuasive Speech Rough Draft
Five years ago on a bright June day, then-20- year-old Amanda Kloehr went about her usual cell phone routine: "Updating my Facebook status, reading other people's updates, and texting," she says. But she wasn't at home or even in class—she was behind the wheel of her car, cruising down U.S. Route 13 at a highway speed. Amanda couldn't have known that moments later her distracted driving would cause her to slam into the tractor-trailer in front of her with enough force to push the entire vehicle forward six feet. "I shouldn't have lived," she says now, still shaken. "I could have been decapitated."Instead, Amanda lost her right eye. It took 36 plates and 48 screws to rebuild her face. And more than 20 surgeries later, the road to recovery still stretches out before her. "I'm in pain everywhere all the time," she says, "but I know I'm lucky to be alive." This story comes from www.teenvogue.com. Is it really worth? Texting while driving is quickly becoming one of the countries most top killers . Many teens don't realize that texting and driving is dangerous, but it is. How big is this problem? “In 2011, 23% of the car accidents were caused from texting and driving. That is 1.3 million crashes.” according to www.textinganddrvingsaftey.com. Many believe that its becoming more of a habit for adults than for teens. Adults maybe the cause of why some teens do it. Kids watch their parents and the they think its safe cause if their parents can do it then it must be. They should be role models. The thing is they all know its wrong but it doesn't seem to stop them.
What is being done? In some states texting and driving has become a law and you will be fined and get a ticket. If its preventing people from texting while behind the wheel that i think its a good idea. No text message is more important than your life or anyones and if it is that important its so easy too just pullover on the side of the road and reply. There are also things we could do to help prevent the problem. Texting isn't the only dangerous thing also playing games and checking your facebook are also the cause of many deaths and accidents. Many teens die everyday or get in a wreck from texting and driving. Maybe they weren't sending a message but receiving and reading one from a friend. Most texting and driving occurs with friends in the car with you. Maybe you do it because you think it makes you cool. Even seeing your passenger on their phone is a distraction. If they want you to look at a picture they found. Many people say texting while driving can be just as dangerous or more dangerous than driving while intoxicated. Teens need to realize the dangerous it puts on them and other people with them. We as teens think that we always need to be in contact with the social world. There isn't many ways we can prevent this but teaching young kids, teens and adults about the dangers might make them think twice before picking up their phone when they are behind the wheel.

Each day we go about our lives without rethinking the repercussions that could arise from our routine actions. Roughly, over 8 people are killed and 1,150 are injured each day from vehicular crashes involving a distracted driver (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). “New research from AT&T shows nearly 4-in-10 smartphone users tap into social media while driving. Almost 3-in-10 surf the net. And surprisingly, 1-in-10 video chat (AT&T).” “7-in-10 people engage in smartphone activities while driving (AT&T).” “A recent AT&T survey found that 97 percent of teens say they know that texting is dangerous. The survey also found: 75 percent of teens surveyed say that texting while driving is “common” among their friends; Almost all teens (89 percent) expect a reply to a text or email within five minutes or less; And 77…

Cuban sandwiches are a favorite in Miami, Florida, where the sandwich is purchased at restaurants or from street corner vendors. Although a Cuban sandwich is much like a regular ham and cheese sandwich, quality ingredients and the technique of grilling the bread until it is golden and crispy make the difference. It is not difficult to make a Cuban sandwich.…

How many people text behind the wheel of their vehicle? Can we relate to the following story? Jaci Lemons* is driving down the street, headed to school. The 17 year old driver is texting another friend. As she looks down to read the incoming text, Jaci veers off to the right and crashes head-on into the back of a parked vehicle. She is taken to the hospital, but after brief examination by the attending ER doctor, Jaci is released. Thankfully, the only thing bruised is her pride, and her pocketbook. Missouri should make texting while driving illegal for all drivers, not just the drivers aged 21 and under. Missouri has passed a state law, on Aug. 28, 2009, that prohibits drivers 21 years of age or younger from sending or reading a text while driving. While that is a great start, it isn't enough. Drivers across the country have been seen in their vehicles doing all sorts of dangerous, weird, and downright strange things while driving. Watching a DVD movie (really), dressing, putting on makeup, eating, texting, etc; but texting is what is causing legislatures some concern here in Missouri. The problem is we spend so many hours behind the wheel that seemingly, we are driving on "auto pilot". (Have you ever driven a while and then could not remember any of it?)…

Every day we witness multiple tragic accidents involving people texting and driving. In my paper I will be arguing that the state of Minnesota should act boldly to create tougher laws on texting and driving offenders, and also create laws to ban people from using hands-free cell phones in their vehicle unless needed for an emergency. Also it is to be determined the meaning of texting and driving, the people involved, the laws needed to enforce it, which is affected when someone is injured or killed; and what is being done about it.…

Enzo’s mother, father, and sister walked away from the wreck as did the driver of the other vehicle Sydney. “Composing a typical text message is roughly akin to closing one 's eyes for nearly five seconds, during which time a car going 55 mph covers more than the length of a football field” (Savitz 2012). Due to the technological advances of the smartphone, and the fact that 50% of all teenagers admit to texting while driving, deaths of teenagers from texting while driving has skyrocketed. The latest data shows that over 3,000 teenage drivers died and over 300,000 were injured last year, as a result of teenage texting while driving. “The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety estimates that it is to blame for 11 teen deaths each day” (Savitz 2012). These deaths and injuries now make teenage texting while driving the leading cause of death among teenagers in the United States. With laws making no difference on whether drivers text, the number of deaths attributed to teenage texting while driving will only rise in the coming…

Another reason why I disagree with the ban of texting while driving is because it isn’t possible to enforce this. In the article “Cities disagree on texting-driving ban” Ms. Gaff says “they ask ‘How can we enforce this?’” (Swartsell) Police officers will not know when a driver is texting. If banned, officers will just be given another reason to stop people. (Radley) They can’t just assume that drivers that are looking down are texting. This wouldn’t be fair to drivers. It wouldn’t make sense to be stopped based on an assumption an officer makes.…

State, Federal, and local lawmakers have placed laws into effect to ban the use of cell phones while driving. No state bans all cell phone use (handheld and hands free) for all drivers, but many prohibit all cell phone use by certain drivers. Even with laws permitting laws enforcement to ticket individuals who are caught texting, people continue to ignore the laws. Here are some solutions we can try: (1) Create cars that block texting while the vehicle is running. (2) Use technology such as Bluetooth headsets. The other solution would be like DWI’s, after the 2nd offense, suspension of driving privileges. With teenagers being the biggest offenders of texting while driving, we need to get their attention and help them understand the important issues at hand, “texting and driving takes lives.…

In Harris County Texas it is said that one of the most dangerous crimes committed is drunk driving. Unfortunately drunk driving is a big issue hanging over the heads of law enforcement. Harris County is number one in the country for drunken driving fatalities, and yet I will make the argument that texting while driving is potentially as dangerous if not more as drunk driving. I believe the reason that this issue is more volatile than drunk driving because everyone is capable of texting while driving. Drunk driving is unique to people that drink alcohol, and when you take the entire population that drinks alcohol it pales in comparison to the population that text while driving. This issue is starting to make national headlines; the government is starting to pay attention to staggering statistics and acting. Since teenagers make up the majority of violators the government has found new ways to reach teenagers and young adults in marketing campaigns. While teenagers are not the only violators the marketing has been focused towards teenagers and young adults and it has shown to be effective in its early stages.…

    a. Virginia Tech Transportation Institute conducted tests using drivers texting, drivers under the influence of alcohol, and drivers under the influence of marijuana. It has been proven that texting is more dangerous than being under the influence. In fact, a distracted driver is more likely to cause an accident 2.8 times as much as a non- distracted driver. The statistics from the study show that drivers, between the age of 17 and 24, reduce their reaction time by 35% while texting. As a driver under the influence of marijuana, reduces their reaction time by 21% and drivers while intoxicated, only 12%.…

The new Wireless Communications Device Law (effective January 1, 2009) makes it an infraction to write, send, or read text-based communication on an electronic wireless communications device, such as a cell phone, while driving a motor vehicle. (CA-DMV) This law is of course one which is enforced in California, however many other states have also outlawed texting while driving and the issue is being debated across the country. Currently in Florida, a proposed law banning texting while driving is being debated in the state legislature.…
