The majority of the people in the world don’t intentionally put themselves in dangerous situations, yet tragedies occur every day. Each year a motorcycle hill climbing competition is held in New Plymouth, Idaho called the Big Nasty Hill Climb. On September 19, 2009 my sister’s best friend Lacy Fine set out for a day of fun with her cousin Brittani and her cousin’s boyfriend Carlos to watch the hyped up event. She’s never been the most cautious person because her attention span is that of someone with ADHD or a stereotypical airhead. I say this with love in my heart, because she was literally a part of my family and would never purposefully hurt someone. I can assume from knowing Lacy better than almost anyone that on that Friday she was animatedly singing loudly to the radio or retelling a funny story with voices as usual. Her focus wasn’t on the task at hand of driving and she missed a stop sign coming down a hill and crashed into another truck. None of the passengers were wearing a seatbelt. The man in the truck was uninjured and Lacy was life-flighted with severe injuries, but both of her passengers were killed instantly. The two of them had just had a baby, which added to the unbearable amount of grief that Lacy and the rest of the family faced.…

Persuasion holds place in almost every niche in our societies. Whether in politics, marketing, or public awareness and education programs, the elements of persuasion will always be indirectly or directly present in any society. Persuasion works because it appeals to different emotions and beliefs that are common among the targeted audiences (Walton 54). It hit right where it should and therefore gets results. When the Bush administration decided to invade Iraq, they used one of the most successful tactics in persuasion; fear. They made the public believe that they are under threat and that Saddam Hussein will use weapons of mass destruction against the American people. The result was a wide approval by the congress and most of the public to invade Iraq.…

Traffic safety experts classify distractions into three main types manual, visual and , cognitive. Manual are those who move their hands freely from the task of controlling the vehicle. Visual, simply when you focus your eyes away from the road and last but not least cognitive, when you let your mind wander away from the task of driving. Even Hands-free or voice-activated text message and email services that are present on your phone or in your car are some of the most major distractions for drivers nowadays. Although you may not be directly holding onto the phone and controlling it, you have to press the buttons in your car or on your Bluetooth headset, speak the proper commands to the device, and then speak the full content of your message or email. This takes your mind off the more important task of focusing on the road and distracts you by causing you to think about something else. When operating a cell phone in any kind of way while you are driving you are directly performing each of these. Texting creates a major distraction while you are driving. In fact, the average amount of time that you may be distracted from the road while texting is about 5 seconds. In a vehicle traveling approximately 55 miles per hour, you will be essentially driving the length of a football field without looking where you are going. sending text messages is the most dangerous. A person…

In Harris County Texas it is said that one of the most dangerous crimes committed is drunk driving. Unfortunately drunk driving is a big issue hanging over the heads of law enforcement. Harris County is number one in the country for drunken driving fatalities, and yet I will make the argument that texting while driving is potentially as dangerous if not more as drunk driving. I believe the reason that this issue is more volatile than drunk driving because everyone is capable of texting while driving. Drunk driving is unique to people that drink alcohol, and when you take the entire population that drinks alcohol it pales in comparison to the population that text while driving. This issue is starting to make national headlines; the government is starting to pay attention to staggering statistics and acting. Since teenagers make up the majority of violators the government has found new ways to reach teenagers and young adults in marketing campaigns. While teenagers are not the only violators the marketing has been focused towards teenagers and young adults and it has shown to be effective in its early stages.…

Texting while driving is not a good habit, with just moving our eyes from the road to answer a simple message can cause someone life. According to Ian Mulgrew, a journalist author from Canada, many accidents are blamed on distracted driving and most of the distractions are caused by cell phone usage. There are many laws being established to try to prevent distracted driving from happening; although they can’t completely stop it. No matter what age of the driver is, under no circumstance should they be texting while driving. Texting or using a cell phone while driving is very hazardous to yourself and the people surrounding you. However, the lives of innocent people are being taken every day due to a simple distraction. According to Mulgrew, car crashes are four times more common to take place while the driver is on their mobile device over any other causes. According to Bret Schulte, talking on a cell phone is not as dangerous as texting these days.in addition, while talking on the phone, it is easier to still keep focused on the road in front of the driver. But when they engage in a text message, it’s not possible to look in both directions at once, therefore all of their focus goes straight to the screen of the cell phone. It’s hard for all drivers, especially teenagers, to put down the cell phone and put their hands on the wheel, which results in many car crashes.…
