What purposes did myths serve to ancient peoples? Myths served an important purpose to the ancient people because it gave answers to some of the unknown questions of those times and it explained traditional customs, beliefs, and values in an existing society.
How do creation myths differ from nature myths? Creation myths explain how the earth came to be while nature myths explain natural phenomena that occur.
What types of works make up the literary genre of folklore? The works that make up the category of folklores are legends, folktales, and fairytales.
What are the characteristics of fables? The characteristics of a fable are that the main character is usually a talking animal and the short story expresses a clear moral at the end.
How are folktales and fairy tales related? Folktales and fairytales are related because a fairy tale is a type of folktale but a folktale cannot be a fairytale. A fairly tale takes place “long ago and far away” and usually involves a person in a royal station while a folktale.

Critical Thinking Questions
Early in this unit, you read the story of Daedalus and Icarus. There are at least two lessons to be learned from this myth. What might those be? From the story of Daedalus and Icarus, I learn that one should listen to instructions and to not kill anyone out of jealousy because there are serious consequences.
Which do you believe is more meaningful reading, mythology or folklore? Why do you think this is so? I believe that both mythology and folklore are meaningful because they are very similar. I preferably like to read mythology because it involves interesting characters with divine powers and monsters.
We look to the past for stories of legendary figures. Future readers will one day be looking to our time for legendary figures as well. Who are some current-day figures who might be considered legendary
