Thank You M Am, By Langston Hughes
Sometimes, short stories can teach you life-long lessons called morals. For example, the story “Thank you M’am” is one of them. Written by Langston Hughes, the story “Thank you M’am” is about a teenage boy who tries to steal a lady’s purse. In return, he gets a surprising and possibly life-changing reaction. When people come across challenging times in life, it can be easier to go on the wrong path than the right path, because the right path is tough - but eventually it leads to a more positive, and better, outcome.
Roger is a character who faces many challenges, and in the beginning of “Thank You M’am,” Roger resorts to crime because of these challenges. In paragraph one, it says, “...when a boy ran up behind her and tried to snatch her purse.” This shows that Roger’s response to his challenges was to steal from someone. Jones also faced challenges in her past and was able to conquer them, become a stronger person, and help motivate other people. An example of evidence that supports this claim is said by Mrs. Jones herself, “‘You thought I was going to say but, didn’t you? You thought I was gonna say, but I didn’t snatch people’s pocketbooks. Well, I wasn’t going to say that.’” This quote demonstrates a deeper connection that Mrs. Jones has that relates to the actions done by Roger. Through her attitude, readers are able to infer that her words have a deeper meaning than what was originally thought. The second quote that portrays how Mrs. Jones was able to overcome challenges in her life, and use them to become a stronger person is, “The woman said, ‘You ought to be my son. I would teach you right from wrong. Least I can do right now is to wash your face. Are you hungry?’” The author is portraying Mrs. Jones as a character who is determined to improve the life of the small boy whose made bad choices in the past. Readers are able to infer that Mrs. Jones and Roger had different ways of coping for their similar

An essential element that adds to the depth and enhances a reader’s comprehension of “The Lesson” is the author’s use of symbolism throughout the story. Sylvia, the narrator of the story, is a born leader. She is used to being in charge of what the rest of her friends think and do. Sylvia resents the appearance of Miss Moore in her life. Miss Moore is a new kind of black woman. She has no first name but is always addressed with her title. She has "nappy hair and proper speech and no makeup”(Bambara 98). The neighbors are not quite sure how to respond to her, which is illustrated by the way Sylvia describes her as someone to laugh at, "the way we did at the junk man,” (Bambara 98) who is considered arrogant and acting above his place. Sylvia also describes Miss Moore in terms of being an unpleasant obstacle, like the winos "who…

She quickly realizes that this woman, named Peggy, is nothing like the women with whom her host, Mariah is associated with. Peggy is far from snotty, uptight, extremely petty, and boring; naturally, Lucy quickly befriends her. Peggy does not want a job as an au pair, and is very open to exploring her sexuality while living in the moment. Peggy and Lucy schedule regular walks on Sundays where they look at men and discuss whether they are attractive and worthy to have sex with. Mariah tells Lucy what “a bad influence like Peggy could be” and how “Peggy was never to come to the house and should never be around the children,” which depicts the strong fear women had of the example Peggy was setting (Kincaid 62). By befriending Peggy, Lucy has opened the door to parties and outings in which she could find eligible men to have sex with. Despite the clear disapproval of Mariah, Lucy remains friends with Peggy throughout the story.…

The act of eating is rarely a morally or politically innocent or benign act, but the cultural and social implications of such eating varies. Using the example of the United States, this paper will focus first on the particular moral ground gained in some Christian communities from particular diets such as the Weigh Down Diet as compared the ethics and politics of the Slow Food movement in the United States. These two examples, while not always interconnected, illustrate how US-Americans explicitly and implicitly understands food and eating as inherently moral and political activities, through which one gains higher moral ground through controlling and maintaining individual physical bodies and/or collective abstract bodies.…
