A GREAT RELATIONSHIP IN THE MAKING
Roger could definitely benefit if Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones had decided to continue their relationship. She would have been a great mentor for him. After he tries to steal her purse, she stops him and drags him home with her. Just in the short time that he was there, he learns a lot from her. Roger learns that life is hard for many people. Spending time with Mrs. Jones gives him a chance to see that though people have hard times and may be poor, it doesn’t mean that people have to make poor decisions, also. He can tell by the appearance of her apartment and the type of place that it was that Mrs. Jones does not have a lot. However, he can tell that she does have a kind and generous spirit. These traits help Roger to make some positive decisions while he is with her. It is clear that Mrs. Jones leaves her purse where Roger can snatch it and run, and Roger knows this. Since Mrs. Jones has shown Roger that she is kind when she does not call the police, this has an effect on him. Because of this he decides to do the right thing and leave her purse alone. Then, it is very clear that Mrs. Jones has great wisdom. Instead of scolding him for trying to take her purse, she tells him that she is sure he grabbed her purse because he is hungry. This is very wise because it helped Roger to calm down and listen. Even leaving the door open and her purse on the bed shows Roger that Mrs. Jones trusts him to do the right thing. This makes Roger feel that he must honor the trust she is showing in him. We don’t know from the events in the story but it may be the first time anyone has ever trusted Roger. Either way, he responded to the trust in a positive way. Finally, Mrs. Jones has a great influence on Roger when she shows how generous she is. If she is eating a meal of beans and canned milk, Roger knows that she does not have a lot. That doesn’t stop her from giving Roger the ten dollars he wanted to buy
