Thank You, Ma Am, By Langston Hughes

In the story "Thank you, Ma'am" the author Langston Hughes characterizes Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones in many ways. First it shows that she's bossy because she told Roger to "Pick up my packet book boy, and give it here." Next it shows that she also is kind hearted by telling Roger "Eat some more, son." Then she is understanding cause of knowing why Roger did what he did. She says in the story she once have done things too which she would not tell him. Langston Hughes was trying to tell us in the story "Thank you, Ma'am" that people act the way they do because of the background of their life, so we need to have the same characteristics as Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones so that we can make their lives better.
