Thank You, Ma’am (by Langston Hughes)
I saw the lady through my own eyes, she was a rather large woman with a huge purse. It was bulging full of items. I ran for the purse, I planned to run after I grabbed it.
As I ran for it, I thought to myself, “Why do I have to do these types of things?”I tried to lunge for it but my footing gave in and I fell instead of running like planned. The lady looked at me and grabbed my torn shirt.
She said “Boy, what do you think you’re doing?”, in an angered tone.
“I’m sorry Ma’am, I just lost my footing. That’s all,” I said with a drop of sweat running down my neck.
“Lying is the one thing that I cannot tolerate, young man,” said the woman with a glare in her eye. “If I were to let you loose, not saying that I will, Will you run?”

The woman kept on walking, disregarding his response. “I’m sorry ma’am, can I go home now? Please.”
“Doesn’t seem like you have a home, seeing that you are trying to steal things from others,” said the woman as she dragged him across the road. “I will take you to my home and give you something to eat.”
“This all seems a bit to convenient,” I said in confusion. “Why are you doing this for me?”
“You’ll find out later,” said the lady in an almost sympathetic tone. She took me home and went behind a curtain, she left me on the bed. She did not watch me, she even trusted me enough to leave her purse on the nightstand next to the bed. I saw the open door and thought of making a run for it but I heard laughing voices coming from the other side of the door. I smelled cabbage soup, my favorite. My stomach began to grumble loudly.
