Thank You Ma Am, By Langston Hughes
People sometimes do things they are ashamed of. But most people try to redeem themselves. The story “Thank you Ma’am” by Langston Hughes is about Mrs.Jones a woman who a boy tried to steal from. But instead of turning him in, to the police she brought him to her house and thought him right from wrong. I believe Deep down Mrs.Jones is driven by the fact that she did something bad in her childhood and her teaching the how to behave is her way of redeeming herself. An example of what Mrs.jones said that shows that she is ashamed of something she did is “‘I have done things too which I wouldn't tell you,son,-neither tell god, if he didn’t already know.’” this shows Mrs.jones is regretting something bad that she did. Another
quote from the story is “‘But I wish you would behave yourself son from here on out. This shows that she is inspiring the boy not to do something bad which is her way of redeeming herself. The third quote is “‘You ought to be my son I’ll teach you right from wrong.”’ This shows that she is teaching the kid to have better manners thus redeeming her sins. as you can see Mrs.jones a person with good intentions but with a troubled past. Langston Hughes is showing us that you don’t have to report anyone but you can educate them.and if you have done something bad you can redeem yourself.
