America has always been regarded as the land of the free and the place where if you work hard, you will reach success. However, Langston Hughes disagrees with this idea in his passage, “Let America be America Again”. Hughes suggests that America was never “America” in the first place, and without unity, America will not be the place everyone has worked so hard to build to be what it is today. In “Let America be America Again”, Hughes develops a theme of commonality and unity being the factors that affects the objective of America being the land of the free.…

Salvation, how many people actually know what it truly means? Better yet, how many times do citizens hear that salvation is the answer to all problems? This, yes, is true, but how many times are Christians encouraged to accept salvation without knowing what they are doing. Langston caught in the middle, sits on the ‘mourners’ bench’ waiting to hear Christ, waiting to feel The Lord, and waiting to somehow see Jesus. In Langston Hughes’ short story Salvation, one is reminded of the biggest controversy found in churches. In this story, the author presents many themes: Man vs. Man, Man vs. Self, and Faith vs. Religion. In Langston Hughes’ Salvation, the themes Man vs. Man, Man vs. Self, and Faith vs. Religion are shown through the characters, setting, and all its symbolism.…

In “Let America be America Again”, Langston Hughes speaks on his opinions of the American Dream. Throughout the poem, Hughes compares his hopes and dreams for America with the reality of life for those outside of certain cultural, religious, and societal groups. This is a dramatic and diverse poem, fluctuating from peaceful moments to angry explosions. The author starts by mentioning of the key vision of America, where there is the hope for liberty and equality. Yet for the oppressed races, American life has been one of persecution. Writing now in the first person, the author empathizes with all struggling Americans, "I am the farmer/ the worker/ the Negro/ I am the people." With the gift of optimism, the writer urges "We, the people, must reclaim the land/ and make America again!"…

In the story Thank You M’am by Langston Hughes Mrs. Jones treats Roger nicely because she feed him and gave him ten dollars to buy what he wanted. In paragraph 42 the author writes, “ She heated some lime beans and ham from the icebox, made cocoa, and made the table.” This quote supports the claim because if she hadn't taken out food to heat up or set a table, she wouldn't be making a meal for them both. Another piece of evidence from paragraph 44 is, “ When they were done eating she got up and said,” Now, here, take this ten dollars and buy yourself some suede shoes.” This quote supports this claim because she gave him ten dollars so he could buy what he wanted, which was the suede shoes. Mrs. Jones treated Roger nicely by giving him food…

I’ve always wondered why Martin Luther King Jr. wanted freedom so badly, so let's go find out. The author wants to persuade us to treat everyone equally, and that the people can’t give up until we get treated equally. Martin Luther King Jr. speech, “I have a Dream”, was most compelling because he is trying to get equal rights for everyone by actually standing up to the cause and his speech usus good figurative language to back up what he is saying. In this speech there are many good points he wants to get across, but i'm going to go over the three main ideas; don’t fall into protesting with violence, people can go back home knowing all of this will be over, the Declaration states that everyone is equal but we don't follow those rules.…
