1) "She was a large woman with a large purse that had everything in it but a hammer and nails." The description of Mrs. Jones' purse written out by Hughes is symbolically portrayed in different ways. The texts states that the purse Mrs. Jones was carrying around had everything in it but a hammer and nails. What is interesting about this phrase is the way it is used. Symbolically the purse has more meaning than how it physically sounds. In my opinion, I found this purse to be the base line of the story. The purse has everything in it except a hammer and nails.
Well, the way the author used the sentence and the way the story is designed, I believe the purse is symbolically more than just a purse. How the purse has everything in it, I think that the emotional, gratitude part of the story is meant.
When the author mentioned that everything was there but the hammer and nails, I believe the author is referring the hammer and nails as the harsh attitude and disgrace Mrs. Jones might have. The purse is almost the way of describing Mrs.

2) Mrs Jones is a woman of modest income. Three pieces from the text that show it: " The boy could hear other roomers laughing and talking in the large house" I found that an interesting piece to be given as an example that Mrs. Jones is one with a modest income. With that piece of text, many assumptions could be made. It shows that Mrs. Jones does not live alone so possibly, she could be renting out the space in her house, to make a benefit of all the rooms with a little added money. As well, she could also be living in an old age home, which is cheaper than owning a house alone. The second point: Mrs. Jones' job. "As they ate, she told him about her job in a hotel beauty shop that stayed open late, what the work was like" I found this section also having a
