Thanksgiving Day Parad: A Short Story
“I almost didn't come over. I called you all night last night, and half the day today, and never got an answer. I figured you'd gone out, met another girl, and was fucking her day and night! Looks like she put up quite a battle” teased Ginny. “You didn't do that, did you?”

The day had been filled with surprises. First, he'd gotten out of the shower to find his towel missing again, then George had tried to make light of getting the house blessed with the minister, and now, Ginny showed up unexpectedly. They weren’t supposed to see each other until Tuesday and here she was. “Look, we need to talk” said Jason in a serious tone.

Ginny's smile faded as her heart began to sink. The fear of having a good thing and losing it came back as she just knew Jason had decided to cast her off while he went to college. Happiness was never going to come to her. She’d grow old with a pot-bellied slob on Welfare, while she tried to slave at a job and make ends meet. Her boobs would sag down to her waist after she gave birth to three kids, and her ass would balloon out the size of a Thanksgiving Day

“First thing, the preacher would only come into the living room and pray. George only asked him for a home blessing, not about battling a demon. The minister didn't go upstairs even when I asked him to. He started up the stairs, but then turned around saying he’d decided it wasn't necessary. It almost seemed like he sensed something and didn't want to face it. Plus, the door slammed as soon as he left. The kitchen cabinet doors opened up, and three dishes and two glasses smashed against the floor. They didn’t magically fix themselves later as the others had done last night. I'd just cleaned up the mess when you got here. You can check the trash can if you want. They’re still there. Ginny, I'm worried about you and your safety here. I love you, I love this house, and I don't know what the hell to do next. Any

In the A Thousand Acres, book one is filled with many characters developing. Ginny’s narration gives us a clear view of each character through her perspective. She shows how situations can change a person. She’s the perfect daughter and housewife. She’s humble and obedient. She lets the need of others take priority of her own. While she takes care of Rose’s, her dad Larry’s, and her own households, she doesn’t see this as a problem. She sees it as a need for the survival of their family farm. "One of the many benefits of this private project, I thought at the time, was it showed me a whole secret world, a way to have two lives, to be two selves." (Smiley 26). This quote’s talking about when Ginny was trying to get pregnant without letting anyone know that she was trying again. This was one thing that she could control in her life. Everything else she did in her life was for her family. Her life before she met Ty, her husband, was controlled by her abusing dad Larry, and after she got married to Ty, it's controlled by him. He was always making her feel uncomfortable. This is the only thing in her life that’s fully under her control. This kind of gives her a feeling of power and being in control of her life.…

Thanksgiving is considered by many as being the worse meal of the year. Why? Because of the extreme overload of high-starch carbs that trigger blood sugar spikes for so many people. Just think of it. Pumpkin pie with a scoop or two of ice cream, corn bread stuffing, mashed potatoes, sugar-laden cranberry sauce and green bean casserole, that's why.…

The anecdote reflects Martha’s characterisation as a dominant force within the marriage. She plays to her audience of Nick and Honey, the use of ellipsis reflecting the almost breathless excitement with which she recounts the event. Her repetition of ‘POW!’ punctuates the narrative, highlighting her role as the deliverer of the knockout blow to George’s masculinity. Her observation that the event was both funny and awful simultaneously is perhaps an apt description of their marriage – a comedy that is excruciating to witness. Martha’s observation that the event has ‘coloured our whole life’ shows how the marriage hinges on a constant iteration of the power relationship that holds them in an emotional stasis – unable to escape the prison of their own making. Martha however concludes the observation with, ‘It’s an excuse, anyway.’ She recognises that they are both looking for excuses for their plight – something that can be used to explain their…
