The 27 Club is basically a listing of popular musicians who died at the age of twenty-seven. A common thread that links all of these artists is that they all had lifestyles influenced by the abuse of drugs and alcohol. It is not documented who first came up with the idea of the Club, but the idea started after the death of four famous musicians. There are many theories, mysteries and myths surrounding the lives and deaths of the members of The 27 Club. In this essay I will discuss the history of the Club, I will talk about the musicians initiated into the Club, and I will talk about the ‘curse’ of the Club. I will also share some interesting facts about the Club. The notion of The 27 Club interests me as I was brought up listening to the music of some of the members. My mother introduced me to songs such as, Cars Hiss By My Window, by The Doors and Lake of Fire, by Nirvana. Since then, I have loved almost all variations of rock music, along with the style and fashion trends that go with the music and hence my interest in The 27 Club.
The idea of the ‘Club’ became extremely popular after the deaths of four famous musicians, all of who died between 1969 and 1971, within a two-year timespan. Brian Jones, who was the founder and guitarist of The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix who was the guitarist, singer and songwriter of The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Janis Joplin who was the vocalist and songwriter for Big Brother and the Holding Company and Jim Morrison who was the lead singer and lyricist for The Doors. These musicians were some of the most influential performers of their time but all had lifestyles affected by drug and alcohol abuse that resulted in their early deaths.
