November 15, 2013 Symbolism Within The Seven Deadly Sins In the picture by Hieronymus Bosch, The Seven Deadly Sins and The Last Four Things, you see several points of interest. There are four little circular pictures that surround a larger picture. Of these four that include death of sinner, judgment, glory and hell. This is what happens to a person after he commits the last deadly sins. Of the seven they include: wrath, greed,envy, gluttony, sloth, pride and lust. These are sins that the average human being commits on a daily basis. At the very center of the painting is a picture of Jesus. He represents the eye of God, the pupil. …show more content…
O that they were wise, that they understood this, that they would consider their latter end! " Bosch 's work warns his audience of the dangers of sin while reflecting on the omniscience and the sovereignty of God. The dangers of sin can be seen in this painting through his use of the deadly sins and how he portrays them. The Catholic Church considers these seven sins as cardinal sins. These sins are the worst sins a human can commit. Those who commit these sins are sent to eternal damnation. The seven deadly sins can be seen depicted in daily actions. And Bosch is trying to show us that God is the ultimate judge and he warns us about the punishments that come upon those who commit these crimes. Bosch also shows us that God is omniscient and sovereign. Christ is the central point in this painting, and Bosch is implying that God watches over us and sees everything we do. As the central figure, nothing is hidden from his view. The seven sins depicted by Bosch present people going about their daily lives. However, each scene shows sin as part of their daily lives. Bosch warns believers that God is always watching and He is in control. Only God controls where we go, the four last things are painted outside the sins, to signify that they have an eternal perspective while the inside are actions one commits while on
