Many Native Americans Died in new england of a European diseases from 1500's to 1600's. After each hardship occurred several neighboring tribes decided to merge together, making their identities very indistinct, even within the indian oral history. However the Abenaki tribe, to avoid the reoccurring hardship moved to Canada, which in fact gave them their name the " Canadian Indians" but they are originally natives to New England. Although the Abenaki strategies to survival was to merge with others and to momentarily cover up their existence resulted in the tribe not able to receive federal recognition it ultimately ensured their people survival.
The clothes worn by the Abenaki people were very diverse and very seasonal.
When it came to the hot summer days the men wore breechcloths tucked over a belt that hung to mid-thigh at the back. The breechcloths were often worn with leather leggings kept in place with strips of cloth to protect their legs. The leggings tapered towards the ankle and the outside was decorated with a fringe or beadwork. Moccasins were made with a long tongue and a high collar that could be folded up or down. however The Abenaki women wore deerskin wrap around skirts or dresses and also wore leggings. In the winter times both the men and the women wore winter cloaks made from buckskin or other animal skins with snow shoes. One distinctive characteristic the Abenaki made when it came to their clothes wore pointed hoods made from leather that covered the shoulders, decorated with feathers of animal hair at the tip.
The Abenaki lived in wigwams which when translated means house are dome-shaped hut or tent made by fastening mats, skins, or bark over a framework of poles. These dome shaped huts were very common among certain people. Wigwams were built with first wooden frames and then covered with tule mats, birch bark and animal skin while ropes were tied in around the house to keep the it in place. Not just wigwams were used with this tribes they also temporary tepees but these were usually only used on hunting trips or in houses that only consisted of 3 people and longhouse were used, These houses were oval-shaped and built up to 200 feet long, 20 feet wide and 20 feet high. when longhouses were made it was mostly due to Inter-tribal warfare so these homes were built with giant poles surrounding multiply houses at a time, like a village.
