First, Penelope was one of the first people at Reardan that accepted Junior for who he is. She saw past the poor, “outcast” side of him, and saw the smart, intelligent, and compassionate side of Junior. Second, Penelope understood that Junior couldn’t provide her with expensive jewelry or surplus amounts of gifts. She wanted Junior for him, not things that came along with him. Third, she helped Junior through his hard times and guided him through bad days. Penelope was tremendously understanding when Junior told her he lost the money he raised on Halloween. She knew Junior tried his best, so she decided to still put both of their names on the money she raised. Fourth, she never treated Junior any differently after she found out Junior is financially challenged. She reassured him, told him it’s okay, and that he’s not any different in her eyes. At first, we could tell she didn’t care about Junior. Then, when the couple started to talk more and get to know each other better, Penelope started defending him. First, Penelope always felt guilty and sorry for Junior when he would get picked on. Penelope always apologized when something bad happened to Junior, even though it wasn’t her fault. We learned that Penelope always tried her best to cheer him up and make him happy. Second, Penelope cried when Junior told her he has to walk to school some days. She felt extremely sorry for him, even though there was nothing she could do. Third, Penelope felt tremendously bad for Junior when she found out about Mary’s death. She hated seeing Junior upset, and seeing him upset would ruin her day.
