Although Dr. Roylott threatened Sherlock in a violent manner, he did not want to kill Dr. Roylott. He was hired to protect Helen Stoner. Sherlock’s initial plan was to investigate the death of Helen Stoner’s sister. He had no intention of Dr. Roylott dying. Sherlock went to investigate and gather evidence that would prove reasonable cause of death of Julia Stoner. He examined the two bedrooms and the rest of the house for clues. His only form of protection was to defend himself against the snake any way possible otherwise; both Sherlock and Dr. Watson faced the danger of being bitten.
