The Aging Musculoskeletal system
As we learn about our body’s muscles and joints we have come to realize that it will stop growing. We understand that when we are younger bone production is at a very high rate of production until puberty. With osteoporosis a bone disease is obtained when your spongy bone becomes porous and the person start losing bones that called bone density loss. This makes the bones weak allowing for breaks and fractures which affects our body structural support. Now the 84 yrs. old white woman is likely to get osteoporosis because of her age and lack of activity and from her eating habits. It’s a known fact that you age it takes longer for bone to form. Human bones need vitamins and mineral to stay strong like calcium, vitamin D, and phosphate are needed to form bone. We can obtain some of the nutrients through diet, the sun and using supplement to add to the body. But the insufficient amount of these minerals is what causes bone problems.
Osteoarthritis is disease of the joints that affects the cartilage in between the bones. Cartilage is there to assist in shock absorbency, cushion for the bones with movement and it assists in gliding. This disease happens when the cartilage wears down letting bone to bone touch. The joint is considered the hinge point for movement that is now lost causing pain. In our 84 yrs. old thin framed women osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. It arises in the elderly from the lack of physical disability among older adults. The person can experience joint stiffness and pain in the hands, knees, hips, feet and spine. This will render everyday living to become very difficult for the person.
Muscular Atrophy is where you have no activity with your muscles and ability is lost in that area becoming flaccid leading to decreased muscle mass. Your muscles itself with atrophy actually just waste away. The main reason for muscle wasting is a lack of physical activity for that disease. This is common in the elderly
