Why is the novel entitled “The Alchemist”
It is a waste of time to read “The Alchemist,” by Paulo Coelho, if the question of which part of the story suggests the title “The Alchemist” remains obscure. Many people have read this book. However, most of them don’t know why the title of this novel is “The Alchemist.” The novel is entitled “The Alchemist” because Santiago learns how to become an alchemist from the alchemist, Santiago experiences himself what only an alchemist can do by help of the alchemist, and it is suggested that he would live by the alchemist’s teaching.
An alchemist is a person who uses alchemy: “the art and science of transformation (Alchemical Journey TV, 2013),” “‘The main goal of this type of alchemy was trying to turn base metals into gold, ....’ ‘Alchemy is often considered the "mother" of chemistry. An alchemist’s “main goal [is] often trying to change common metals into gold (Schaffer, 2012).” Santiago makes it to the goal by finding the treasure under the sycamore tree and not leaving it just stuffs under the ground. After that Santiago goes back to the desert to meet Fatima, his lover, Santiago would go by the teaching of the alchemist―the alchemist teaches him that Santiago should listen to his heart, not thinking about fear of failure. Santiago will help people who follow their Personal Legend as the alchemist did for him. Santiago’s future like this is suggested based on the meaningful smile of Santiago after the alchemist says that “No matter what he does, every person on earth plays a central role in the history of the world. And normally he doesn’t know it (Coelho, 1988, pg.109).” The suggested future life of Santiago by the alchemist’s teaching is a possible factor that affected Coelho when he gave the title “The Alchemist” to this
