A significant quote which was told as a lesson to Santiago by Melchizedek is, "It's this: that at a certain point in our lives, we lose control of what's happening to us, and our lives become controlled by fate. That's the world's greatest lie"(Coelho 18). This is important because fate doesn't control one’s life but rather it’s there for us to reach it, people feel overwhelmed but always have control and the opportunity to change. When the two men beat him up and shared their dreams in mockery, Santiago realized his trip fulfilled his desire to travel and to discover the treasure, he also found his love and discovered the Language of the World. In addition , “We are afraid of losing what we have, whether it’s our life or our possessions and property. But this fear evaporates when we understand that our life stories and the history of the world were written by the same hand”(Coelho 79) this is significant because Santiago once feared losing what he loved, the one way he had a chance to travel was by being a shepherd, he sold his sheep in order to find treasure. He had the mentality to proceed the journey when those around him encouraged him as well. Finally another memorable quote is, “The secret is here in the present. If you pay attention to the present, you can improve upon it. And, if you improve on the present, what comes later will also be better. Forget about the future, and live each day according to the teachings, confident that God loves his children. Each day, in itself, brings with it an eternity”(Coelho 106) this is significant because Santiago improved his present by sacrificing most of his possessions creating a better future for himself with love,
