To start off, the book explains how a boy named Santiago became a shepherd. The boy wanted to explore the world and discover other types of lands not just live in the same old place he was birthed in. He was given 3 gold coins to start off and buy himself a flock of sheep. Then after starting his adventure to explore the world as a shepherd, he soon has a dream where a boy takes him to the Egyptian pyramids where he would find a treasure. However, when the location of this treasure was going to be revealed he woke up ;in addition, this happened to him twice. Santiago decided to find the meaning behind his dream ,so he took advice from a gypsy fortune teller and by a mysterious man who claim to be the ancient King of Salem. The little boy soon found himself heading North Africa.
Santiago was crossing through the Strait of Gibraltar and Tangier, where he robbed of his money. However, he is able to work hard and gain enough to join a caravan across the desert. Santiago’s journey through the desert is highly symbolic of the path that must be taken by the spiritual initiate, and the challenges and fears that they must face along the way.
