The Alternate Speaker The story The Alternate Speaker is about a boy named Daniel, who is in a speech competition and has high hope in getting into the regional competition. Unfortunately, Daniel comes in as fourth place which means he can't get into regionals, unless someone can't make it. Daniel becomes sad, and looses hope in ever making it to regionals. He looses all hope until a girl in regionals gets sick and Daniel has to compete. Daniel gets so excited to compete in regionals. He enters regionals with his head high and gets fourth place. Daniel was so proud of himself. Daniel's attitude changes. At first, Daniel looses all hope in getting into regionals. For example, "I might as well not placed at all." He feels like a sore looser, that wishes he never placed at all. Daniel prepared for the speech competition for a long time. For instance, "Daniel had spent weeks preparing for the contest.." He was crushed when he didn't make it to regionals. Daniel spent all that time practicing. Daniel's attitude quickly begins to change into getting into regionals. For instance, one of the girls who made it into regionals got sick and couldn't make it so, Daniel had to take her place. Daniel was so excited he could compete in regionals. For example, once Daniel heard the news that he was going to be in regionals he jumped out of bed with joy and was ready to compete. Daniel's attitude becomes even better after regionals. For example, he got fourth place in regionals which is pretty good but the old Daniel hated coming in fourth. The new Daniel was so proud of himself. Daniel now has a positive attitude and hope for everything he competes in. For instance, "Daniel knew that there just might be a chance.." That shows a sigh of hope and a positive attitude. In the end, Daniel changed so much through this process. He changed from a negative Nelly, to a positive Polly. Daniel now believes that he can do anything and has hope.

After over a year of efforts trying to learn Socrates’s teachings, his teacher informs Dan that made a major improvement: he is no longer a young fool, he now is more of a man, but the biggest difference is that he has spirit. He still has a long way to go though, and the next step is moderating his life, he needs to “Follow the house rules”. His life is now going to be modeled after Socrates’s Way of The Peaceful Warrior, and he is going to have to follow rules for the most basic things, such as chastity, sobriety and vegetarianism. He’s willing to sacrifice and give up things he is addicted to in order to stop the chaos in his mind, to reach peace inside. Even the smallest changes, the ones we think cannot make a difference, are immensely important if one wants to alter the way he’s living.…

The fact that he went “without complaint” indicates that for “beaten his classmates to the answer” he thought he may be getting rewarded not quite punished in the way he did. The innocence of the character is also shown through the fact that he was unaware. The “swinging his arms at his side” insinuates the vulnerability if Daniel. It shows that he has not been told fully about this war and his simply mind is protected from such impurities. This innocence and vulnerability which are generally normal traits for children result in him losing his life. This also leaves the other children without a friend or family member, so this war also has an indirect effect on them causing them to lose people who are close to them Daniel is a key character in reflecting…

The first tool that Daniel used to get me hooked and want to continue watching this film was talking about his personal experience with genocide. It’s one thing for a filmmaker to do research on genocide and talk about what the read and learn about, but to be able to hear from someone who’s own father survived one of the most talked about genocides in modern history is completely different. Being able to hear first hand stories from Daniel’s father and see the place where his family was brutally murdered, the home where he grew up and a ten year old boy had to contemplate his own death was more than enough to keep me on the edge of my seat and keep watching. This personalization of genocide made this film much more than just someone spewing out facts and kept me watching until the very end. Another technique that kept me watching and showed me that this film was important was Daniel traveled to many different countries to get an up close view of the genocide that took place there. When Daniel visited the mass graves in Guatemala and held the bones of adults and children who were brutally massacred I couldn’t help but shed a tear because those people were once someone’s mother, father, son, daughter and now they have been reduced to bones on the table of a forensic anthropologist. Seeing the bones of these victims made the genocide real helped to bring home the message that genocide is really worse than war and is one of the most inhumane things one can do. Along with…

I always identify myself as a listener. If I do not know how to respond to others, then I should put myself into the listener role. After I studied the chapter, I realized that I am not a good listener. To my understanding, a good listener is better at observing a person’s expressions and weigh his/her words carefully and know how to respond. Unfortunately, I always mess up with the responses, and sometimes I cannot catch the main point from the speaker.…
