During the film, many traits about the Amazon are discussed at length. One of the most unique characteristics of the Amazon is its people. The indigenous people of the Amazon, known as Caboclos, are people that have adapted to survive in the Amazon. They build their homes high to avoid the flood and are constantly adapting themselves to the environment. An example of this would be how they fish for food. They must lower or raise their homes every year for the flood and they must also set numerous amounts of nets and traps to catch their fish. Also, due to the of the rural area the Caboclos live in, they must travel very far to sell fish and even then they will make little money.
The fish of the Amazon also include one of the most interesting species of fish in the world. One species, in particular, the Arowana, is unique as it eats insects when they fall into the water or grabs them by jumping up in the air. This earned in the nickname “water monkey.” The male Arowana will also hold all of its young inside its mouth to protect them from danger as well as give birth to them.
The Amazon is also home to numerous rare and unique species. The bald, white-haired Uakari monkey is only found in the Amazon and even then it is still a very rare species. The Uakari have uncommonly short and stubby tails. They are mostly fur and weigh only ten pounds. The Uakari is so rare that most of the Caboclos have never seen or heard of them
