The American Dream In August Wilson's Fences

The production of Fences was very intriguing, from the actors to the scenery. Throughout the play, Troy, who is a respectable friend, father, husband and brother, faces many mindful hardships with all of his loved ones. Troy’s dream of becoming a major-league baseball player was crushed, he says that it was because of the color of his skin, but Rose, Troy’s wife, expresses that it was only because he was too old of age. And because of this Troy does not support the idea of his son Cory to go off to college to play football. Cory and Troy continue to bump heads throughout the play because Cory is very passionate about football and does not want to work like his father wants him too. This is very significant to the American Dream theme in the play, both Cory and Troy are trying to attain their own American dream, Troy wants order in his household, more so feel more in control as if his wife and son does not make him feel in control enough. And Cory just want the right to become successful in the way he chose to, and that is to go off to college for football.
