As James Truslow Adams wrote in his novel “The Epic of America”, he states "The American Dream is that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement”. Also in many people’s opinion it means, working hard to accomplish your dreams, protecting your country, and making others happy through happiness of your own. Although the American dream may be achieved through many different forms and standards of living by citizens across the nation. taking the role as an American, most feel the need to protect their loved ones and their country. A good way to do this is serving in the military. Si Robertson is a veteran of the U.S army, serving in the Vietnam War. Si Robertson is an honored war veteran with almost thirty years of military service. Shortly after joining the Army at age seventeen, he was sent away to serve in the Vietnam War. After fighting through several years of this war he was brought back home safely to be stationed in a military base in the United States. As the United States of America has fought in several wars, it is not only an honor but a privilege to say that you have put your life on the line for those around you. After retiring from the United States Army in 1993, Si has been helping his older brother with building duck calls. It is your duty as an American to stand firmly in what you believe in and to do your part in protecting your family and country and Si Robertson has done an excellent job of this by risking his life overseas to protect the things most valuable in his life.
Working hard to accomplish your dreams is a big part of the American lifestyle.
Si did this after serving countless years in the Army and then finally retiring from the military to come home and help his older brother start up the now multimillion dollar duck call company. This company is called “Duck Commanders”. Since he has came back to help his brother in 1993 to make duck calls, he still makes the most important part of the duck call the “reed”. Where ever you are in the world everyone is working hard to make a living, but here in America what we work hard for is more than a status, but is building up to a living a life you could only dream about. For someone like Si to actually see that he is living that dream is something that he can be proud of. Being successful in accomplishing his dreams it has caused a greater and stronger relationship with his family, who all work as a part to keep this family business up and running. Si Robertson set out to help his older brother with this business and after working hard in the military and countless hard and long nights building these calls, he and his brother where finally rewarded nicely with the feeling o accomplishment. This feeling is only attained through the hard work and dedication the two brothers put in it.
There is something about being an American that is quite amazing. We being Americans can be happy and making others happy by doing what they love doing. Si Robertson does this in many ways by helping out his church, telling the younger generations about the war, and
much more. By watching any episode of Duck Dynasty you can see that Si is the most encouraging person on the show and always leaves a smile on some ones face. Si also can find joy in anything he does. Around Christmas he dresses up and passes out presents at his church. He also makes kids happy by going and telling them his past war stories. And even after hours of stories the smile on his face is just as big as that smile on the kid’s faces. Si has a story or at least thinks he can relate to any situation, but just as Willie, Si’s nephew says, “The Vietnam vet will often share his war stories with the guys, which usually gets the crew behind schedule…” (A&E meet Si Robertson). Everything Si Robertson does and throughout his entire life he said always does what makes him happy which in return makes everyone else happy. The pursuit of happiness is a major part of the American history and is why many come to the US, because they want to pursue their own American Dream.
The American Dream has a different meaning for almost every American and each goes about attaining this differently. By this people can achieve their own definition of their American dream to a certain extent. Si Robertson sufficiently embodies the idea of the American dream through a traditional lifestyle, a diligent and hardworking character, and withholding the position of a retired veteran. Everyone should aspire to achieve “their” standard of the American dream, and the dream is very much achievable. The American dream varies between every individual, causing the American Dream to vary. With that being said, there is no one true correct standard of the American Dream and everyone is entitled to their own standards and ideas of what they believe to be their American Dream.
