The Roman soldiers made up the strongest army in the world. A single soldier joined for 20 to 25 years. A normal soldier was called a “legionary”, and a whole force of them would rarely be defeated over 500 years. The legions were mainly footsoldiers, supported by people from conquered lands.
Most of the ancient Roman weapons were made entirely out of iron and wood. Auxiliaries stayed back, using bows and spathas, a type of sword. Legionaries would use catapults called ballistas and all kinds of spears and swords.
