Hi, my name is Laura Winters and I’m a mathematics teacher here at Desert Sands. I have been teaching for over 20 years, mostly in traditional schools in Los Angeles Unified School District. I have taught all levels of math, from 7th grade arithmetic through AP Calculus. I am also credentialed in English and French, and have taught all levels of these subjects, including AP French Language and AP Art History. In the past, I have sponsored junior and senior classes and various clubs and coached Academic Decathlon for several years.
I come from a family of teachers-great-grandmother, grandmother, aunt, mother, father, and a niece. I guess it’s in my DNA, but I enjoy explaining concepts and working with young adults. I have one sister and one brother, along with one niece and one nephew. I am engaged to a wonderful guy that I sat next to in traffic school several years ago. We plan to be married next year, but haven’t set the date yet.
My hobbies include reading, cooking, especially baking, watching movies and plays, visiting museums and national parks, and traveling. With my family, I have visited 48 of the 50 states, as well as Canada, Mexico, and Russia. By myself or with friends, I have been to 19 countries in Europe and 4 countries in South America. One of my lifetime goals is to visit 100 countries, so that I can become a member of the Century Club. When I taught at a traditional high school, I took students on guided trips to Europe during the summer. It was awesome to be with my students when we visited some of the wonders and monuments of Europe!
I enjoy meeting and working with students on a more personal basis here at Desert Sands. Feel Free to ask for my help and/or support on academic or personal matters. I’m here to help you, in any way that I can, earn your high school diploma. I look forward to working with you.
My expectations:
Be punctual for your appointments
Be respectful to other students, staff and teachers
Have transportation details worked out to permit you to stay the required time
Calling if you will be unable to make your appointment

A famous author named Richard Wright once said, “All literature is a protest”. In simpler terms, books have been written to raise awareness about problems in order for humans to find solutions for them. This quote is true because in most works of literature the author makes their characters go through difficult obstacles to overcome that not everyday people go through. The book Night was written to protest against anti-Semitism, which means hatred towards Jews. This book took place during the Holocaust where times were hard and unforgettable for the Jews. The main character Elie takes the reader on a grieving journey where he describes his accounts from the Holocaust where he was mistreated and was seen as an outsider. On the other hand, the book Animal Farm by George Orwell was written to alert the world about totalitarian leaders and perplexed people. Totalitarian leaders had control over society, which gave them the right to mistreat their people and abuse their power. Napoleon who was the main villain of…

John F. Kennedy once stated “Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable. In other words, if we can’t resolve our problems peacefully, then violent revolution is bound to happen. This is true because in life when people cannot get what they want peacefully, they turn to violence. The pieces of literature which prove the quote true are the book; Animal Farm written by George Orwell, and the song; “The International” written by Eugene Pottier. Animal Farm relates to this lens because the animals have a revolution which turns out to be entirely violent, and not at all peaceful. “The International” relates to the lens because it is about the servants coming together to fight for their freedom instead of peacefully working towards it.…

George Orwell 's views on totalitarian governments were not concealed from public view. He expressed his thoughts and opinions through his books. Among these books were Nineteen - Eighty -Four and Animal Farm, which were his works that most obviously portrayed his disfavor for totalitarian governments. Totalitarian governments are controlled by political authorities who have control of all aspects of society. Nineteen-Eighty-Four and Animal Farm are two different books that have different ways of expressing the same theme. For example, Animal Farm is constructed on a farm and the characters are animals and Nineteen - Eighty - Four is set in a society with actual people. However, they still express how totalitarian governments are faulty systems with horrible leaders. Animal Farm and 1984 share a mutual theme, Orwell 's fear of totalitarian governments, but they also share differences of characters, settings, and sub-themes.…

The attitude you have towards work can be greatly influenced by how the person in charge runs things. This statement is true in George Orwell’s allegorical novella “Animal Farm.” The attitudes of the animals of Manor Farm (later changed to Animal Farm) change depending on who is in charge of it. Under Mr. Jones’ rule, the animals were overworked, tired and starved, and they did work only to avoid being beaten. Under the reign of Snowball and Napoleon, the animals were tired but they were well fed and happy to do work. This is because the work they did benefited themselves, rather than humans who gave nothing back to them. Finally, under Napoleon’s supremacy, the animals liked work less and less because they were tired, overworked and underfed.. So, as you can see, the person who is in control of animal farm affects the way the animals feel about work.…

Since the founding of the United States, the founding fathers feared a government that would become too authoritarian. To contrast this, they allowed the right to protest in the First Amendment. However, protesting usually does not do enough. Often, civil disobedience is necessary to provoke conversation about sometimes immoral societal norms. Many examples include Edward Snowden, Chelsea Manning, Rosa Parks, and others.…

English political language has become deceptive, unclear and uncreative enabled by writers and speakers who use confusing words to appeal to their audiences. In the Russian Revolution, blood purges can be defined as the elimination of Joseph Stalin’s opposition or anyone who criticized or opposed the Bolsheviks. Stalin believed that he was threatened by the people inside Russia who disliked him or the government. The purges were not planned at all and were random. Victims of them included anyone who had sympathy, acquaintance, or association with the Trotskyites (the enemy), or anyone who doubted or opposed Stalin’s government. Stalin would hunt down any person who was even the slightest bit suspicious (The Great Purges 1 and 3).…

Animal Farm: Is it just a simple fairy tale or really a deep political satire? Animal Farm is a fairy tale written by George Orwell. It takes place at an English farm in an unspecified time, most likely around the early or middle 1900s. The characters are talking animals, and a few humans with whom they interact. The book targets a society in which freedom is attacked. More specifically, Animal Farm targets Stalin, because the book was written around his time period, but also targets totalitarianism in general. Orwell’s political enemy is totalitarianism and is shown when Napoleon has Squealer glorify him, when Napoleon has the Commandments changed, when Napoleon feeds the animals little, but works them hard, and when Napoleon eliminates his enemies.…

After a few hours when all of the animals were in a deep sleep, Napoleon walked down to the shed with Pilkington to observe Napoleon’s livestock. At this point, Napoleon and all of the farmers were very drunk off of Napoleon’s homemade whiskey. Little did they know that Squealer wasn’t drunk at all and had a plan to kill Napoleon for power. Squealer had a big mouth, so he had to tell the animals, Squealer had persuaded the animals to hate Napoleon, and that he himself was going to make the farm a better place. The animals were cheering for squealer; this commotion resulted in Pilkington snooping into the barn.…
