The importance of identification of a certain microorganisms can range between a life threatening diseases to a creation of certain antibiotic. Understanding the principals of living microbes and identifying my unknown bacteria through numerous biochemical and metabolism tests, with the outmost confidence, Proteus vulgaris had the precise qualifications. The point of this report is to further explore the identification of my unknown bacteria by revealing the results of the experiments and comparing them to the other six known bacteria: Micrococcus luteus, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Alcaligenes faecalis, Escherichia coli, and Proteus vulgaris that were used in the lab, as well as comparing and contrasting the actual and factual results.…

Blastomyces dermatitidis is a type of pathogenic fungus which causes Blastomycosis, a yeast-likeyeastlike infection which occurs most frequently in dogs. It is seen most often in large breed male dogs, and especially in hunting dogs, sporting breeds, and dogs that spend a lot of time in environments where the Blastomyces organism exists, but female dogs are also susceptible. This fungus is commonly found in decaying wood and soil, especially in places with a wet environment, like riverbanks, lakes, and swamps where damp soil lacking direct sunlight cultivates the growth of the fungus. It also thrives in areas that are rich in decaying matter, such as wooded areas, forests, and farms. The fungus is transmitted by the spores it releases to the air, which enters the body through inhalation. When inhaled, the spores travel through the lungs and become large, thick-walled, yeast-like organisms that multiply within the lungs and other tissues of the body. Blastomycosis primarily affects a dog's skin and lungs, although eyes, joints and other organs can be affected as well, and if left untreated, the disease will eventually cause death.s…

Staphylococcus epidermidis is one of the most prevalent microorganisms found on the human skin and in the mucous membranes, however, it is a typically overlooked bacterium because there is very little that is known about it. Though it is not as aggressive as its cousin Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis is the most frequent cause for nosocomial pathogens, especially among newborns, the elderly, and anyone who has a compromised immune system. These infections are usually associated with intravascular catheters and other indwelling medical devices ("Staphylococcus epidermidis"). S. epidermidis produces a biofilm that grows on medical devices and then microorganisms are able to attach to themselves to the biofilm. It is also resistant to common antibiotics which make it difficult to treat which is why it is very important for hospitals to prevent infection by keeping a sterile environment and to follow aseptic techniques at all times ("Staphylococcus epidermidis").…

Antimicrobial effects of cilantro against the gram positive bacteria S. epidermis and the gram negative bacteria E. coli were looked at. We predicted that cilantro would act as an antibiotic against S. epidermis but not to E. coli because S. epidermis does not contain an outer membrane whereas E coli. does. We predicted that the semi-permeable outer membrane of E. coli would protect the bacteria from any antimicrobial properties of cilantro. A drop of cilantro juice and water in varying concentrations (1:10, 1:20, 1:40, 1:80) was added to a nutrient agar plate inoculated with S. epidermis and a nutrient agar plate inoculated with E. coli. The plates were incubated for 48 hours and then observed for a zone of clearing where the cilantro juice drop was placed. Cilantro was found to not display antimicrobial activity against either bacterium in the experiment in any of the different dilutions. These results could have to do with the possible contamination of cilantro or the specific bacteria we chose to target. Additional studies of cilantro should be conducted on different types of bacteria in order to gain a better understanding of how the herb works as an antimicrobial.…

This project’s purpose is to find the effects of UV light on Staphylococcus epidermidis, furthermore recognized as staph infection. Staph infection is an infection usually acquired on the skin that can promote fever, nausea, pain, boils, and can lead to MRSA, which can lead to death. Because there is no cure for staph infection, this experiment called for research on clinical trials. A clinical trial was established that used blue light therapy to delay and kill the growth of staph infection. Coincidentally, blue light therapy is extremely similar to UV light, so that inspired this project. The materials used were glass petri dishes, an autoclave, Staphylococcus epidermidis, tanning lights, black light, sunlight, agar, and an incubator. To…

We have all heard about the stories and have seen the movies in which the protagonist wakes up in a tub covered in tons of ice and stitches in his side only to realize that he was a victim of organ theft. There have been many movies surrounding this horrid topic, and many people believe this concept is fictitious; however these movies have partial truth to them. There are many cases across the globe in which people have been given faulty organs, and cases in which doctors have been caught in the act of harvesting organs from deceased patients, but all of these cases are a result of one single issue. The violence surrounding global organ theft and trafficking is a direct result of lengthy periods of time for legal transplants, and the only way to prevent or completely resolve this issue is to re-examine the waiting process for transplants.…
