The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz
The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz

1. My impression of Duddy Kravitz after reading the first chapter is that Duddy is that he is one of the more obnoxious students at FFHS; he smokes and ignores teacher’s commands. Also he talks back to teachers. He seems to be more of a bad apple and tries to be the “funny/cool” one in his class, by drawing on the board and performing stunts like the one he did to the pastor at the new church by convincing him to hand out pamphlets at the school. He terrorizes other students at other schools with snowballs. Duddy is the leader of his group of friends and they follow him just like terrorizing students with snowballs. Over all Duddy does not emit the straight edge, straight “A’s” type of student persona.

2. After reading the first two chapters my impression of John MacPherson is he was the type of teacher that really wanted to do good, provide and invoke a good impression, he never strapped because he thought that type of punishment wouldn’t help him teach or keep his students in line. He eventually got tired of teaching and it seemed he gave it up, waiting and counting down the years till he can retire. He cares for his wife who is obviously sick and that seems to stress him out. I think Macpherson is a good person who has been twisted over time making him tired, and that causes him to say things like he did about Duddy’s dad.

3. Duddy’s father seems to be more of a chill dad; he lets Duddy smoke and drink. He lets Duddy experience and be around aspects which most people would not let their children be allowed to see or hear. Max also tells stories and seems to be quite popular amongst his friends. Max seems to be the kind of parent that every kid wants but doesn’t want at the same time, they can slake off but sometimes you need some strictness in your life and a person to be there to help you or to be there for you.

4. Mr. Cox is another teacher at FFHS. He like Mr. MacPherson doesn’t believe in strapping and is a

Duddy’s relationship with his family has not always been very strong, but he always looked up to older brother, Lennie. Duddy admires Lennie’s achievements in medical school and aspires to gain success just as he has. It seemed as though Lennie cast a shadow over Duddy because he aspired to be a doctor which is a glorified profession that requires a lot of knowledge and schooling. Duddy’s constant struggle to overcome this shadow that was cast on him is what led him to do such ruthless things and betray his family. Metalluk says in his article, A Born Pusher, “Duddy is not academically inclined, but he’s grown up with a myriad of influences emphasizing the importance of being successful”. (Metalluk) Since they were young, Lennie has always received more attention than Duddy has which makes him feel the need to work even harder to prove to his family that he can succeed. But Duddy has a weakness which is a desire for love from his family. But he never felt as though he received as much love as his brother did. It didn’t help that Lennie was…

While in Duddy’s own mind, his quest for land and wealth is an exercise in self-reinvention, this is far from the case. In reality, his relationships and ventures only solidify the person he’s been since his days at Fletcher’s Fields: a charming, ruthless and manipulative dreamer.…

If one had to portray a bully, John’s character perfectly sets the mould for it. He is instantly hated by the entire group the moment he starts speaking to them because of his general attitude towards everyone. He shows no respect for authority as he starts destroying school property the moment he steps foot into the class room. He has an air of reckless carelessness about him which he portrays through his body language and attire. He makes it very clear to everyone present that he is not looking to make any friends and begins to berate and pick on Claire’s character, whom he has feelings for.…

FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS Simcha, Max & Benjy A father son relationship can, at times be very strong. Other times it can be like the example of Simcha and Benjy. Benjy, at one time must have been Simcha's great pride. He had it all it seemed, a wife, money and tons of it and land. Land for Simcha really seemed to be the major factor in measuring a man's worth though I bet that he soon thought otherwise when Benjy made others believe he was impotent. After that it seemed that Simcha was disappointed in what was once probably his most favorite son.…

The film shows the mothers interacting more with the babies than the fathers. But the social interaction that fathers provide show a great insight to a community’s culture since a fathers’ roles can vary greatly depending on how they perceive gender roles. Hatti’s father appears in the film the most. It shows him taking her to a “mommy and baby” class, feeding her, and taking her a shower. At one point at a park, he puts her on a roller coaster and she ends up falling. Fathers are known to take higher risks with their children, which are important since mothers tend to cuddle their daughters more. Ponijao’s father did not appear in the film, but he did appear in the bonus features and got credit. Mari’s father is shown entertaining her while he talks on the phone.…

John is firstly depicted as a brash and slightly aloof man with good intentions, but as the story develops, these quirks lose their initial romance and his character appears intrusive and pompous, due to his sesquipedalian qualities. He dominates the conversation and ushers Carol repeatedly; an action which is generally regarded as being extremely derogatory and advocates the belief that his elder status gives him a right to be condescending.
