“Would anyone light a lamp and then put it under a basket or under a bed? Of course not! A lamp is placed on a stand, where its light will shine. For everything that is hidden will eventually be brought into the open, and every secret will be brought to light. Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand. Pay close attention to what you hear, the close you listen, the more understanding you will be given – and you will receive even more.” (Mark, n.d.)
Parables are written recounts of Jesus’s life and his teachings. They usually contain a morale or a spiritual belief that people use today. In Jesus’s parable he uses a common object. The reason Jesus used a common object was, so that his followers would understand what he was talking about. In parable of the lamp Jesus used a common middle-eastern oil lamp that every family would have. There are a total of 41 parables in the bible. Mark the author …show more content…
of the parable of the lamp wrote six of the parables. (What is a parable?, 2015)
Mark was the author that wrote the first version of the parable of the lamp.
Mathew and Luke repeated versions of this parable. Mark wrote recounts of Jesus’s life detailing Jesus’s teachings. Mark also wrote stories about Jesus, from when he was baptized to when he died and rose from the dead. Evidence shows that Marks writing was the oldest. Mark wrote the parable of the lamp around 55AD, which was shortly after Jesus had died. (Wikipedia, 2015)
The audience that listened to Jesus teach the parable of the lamp included crowds and gentiles. Jesus intended that his followers were his disciples. His followers listened to him perform miracles and watched Jesus teach his values. (Shroeder, 2011)

Psalm 119 verse 105 states your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. In the parable of the lamp, the word of God through Jesus is represented as being the light that shines out to the world. Jesus used the word ‘lamp’ to describe how his followers were to live in the light of his truth and love. (Schwager,
1998)
In the first paragraph Jesus was talking about the lamp and how it is intended to be used. He told us that you don’t hide the lamp under a bed or a basket, you place it on a stand where the lamp will shine and light the room. There is no point putting a lamp under a bed hidden away. By using common sense, light is only given when a lamp is lit and placed out in the open. Lamps don’t only light rooms they also light people, their thoughts and actions. (Schwager, 1998) (Shroeder, 2011)
The parable also says “for everything that is hidden will eventually be brought into the open and every secret will be brought to light.” What this means is that we can try to hide our secrets and actions from ourselves and from others, but God always knows the truth. (Schwager, 1998)
After listening to the meaning of the parable, how do you want to live your life now? Personally I think it means to me that I should be more open to the world around me, be truthful to God and be a good person to others
