PARABLE OF THE LAMP
“Would anyone light a lamp and then put it under a basket or under a bed? Of course not! A lamp is placed on a stand, where its light will shine. For everything that is hidden will eventually be brought into the open, and every secret will be brought to light. Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand. Pay close attention to what you hear, the close you listen, the more understanding you will be given – and you will receive even more.” (Mark, n.d.)

Parables are written recounts of Jesus’s life and his teachings. They usually contain a morale or a spiritual belief that people use today. In Jesus’s parable he uses a common object. The reason Jesus used a common object was, so that his followers would understand what he was talking about. Mathew and Luke repeated versions of this parable. Mark wrote recounts of Jesus’s life detailing Jesus’s teachings. Mark also wrote stories about Jesus, from when he was baptized to when he died and rose from the dead. Evidence shows that Marks writing was the oldest. Mark wrote the parable of the lamp around 55AD, which was shortly after Jesus had died. (Wikipedia, 2015)

The audience that listened to Jesus teach the parable of the lamp included crowds and gentiles. Jesus intended that his followers were his disciples. His followers listened to him perform miracles and watched Jesus teach his values. (Shroeder, 2011)

Psalm 119 verse 105 states your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. In the parable of the lamp, the word of God through Jesus is represented as being the light that shines out to the world.
