Part I Reading Journal: Chapter 1-13
1. Plot summary of these chapters.
The story starts off with Mr. Pontellier and a talking parrot on the porch. The parrot begins yelling at Mr. Pontellier who leaves to go read his newspaper elsewhere. He describes that the newspaper is a day old but he is just now reading it because he was gone in New Orleans. Mr. Pontellier observes his two sons playing in the yard with their nanny. After a while, Edna Pontellier and a boy named Robert join Mr. Pontellier on the porch. Mr. Pontellier comments on how sunburnt the two are and they begin telling him a story of their activities earlier in the day. Pontellier: The leading female character in The Awakening is an attractive but very complicated woman. She is constantly comparing herself to the people that surround her as they are Creole and she is not. For example, most of the women in the town look after their children very closely ensuring their every need is met while Mrs. Pontellier isn’t a “mother-women”. She feels oppressed by her husband who criticizes her often. She has grown a liking to a young boy of the town but she tries to hide her affection for such boy.
Madame Adele Ratignolle: The secondary female character in The Awakening is a very “beautiful angel” that has a passion for children, being pregnant and making clothing for the children. Adele is a very close and dear friend of Edna and enjoys spending time with her friend.
Robert: The secondary male character in The Awakening is an attractive 26 year old young man that has a fond obsession for Mrs. Pontellier. He spends his days at the side of Edna and flirts with her constantly. Mr. Pontellier is far from fond of him because of his flirtation ways with Edna. Robert is also characterizes as less wealthier than the Pontelliers.
