The BSN Program Analysis
RNs with a higher education have an expanded incite/knowledge that is gained through the BSN program that is not a part of the ADN program. ADN and diploma nurses are excellent providers of care however; changes in healthcare to promote well care, quality, and safety through evidence practice allows the BSN to not only be at the bedside, it affords one with a BSN to be a leader in many fields of nursing. Despite the focus and encouragement on the RN to BSN education the there continues to be many associate degree and diploma nursing graduating to the workforce.

Before designating the differences between the baccalaureate degree prepared nurse and associate degree prepared nurses it is important to examine their similarities. Both ADN and BSN nurses take the same licensure exam, the National Council Licensure EXamination, and both receive the same license upon passing the licensure exam. Adding to that both must go through rigorous training prior to providing patient care. The BSN and ADN nurse both assist in determining the health status and needs of clients (Arlington, 2003). Nonetheless though there are similarities there are also many differences. Baccalaureate nurses receive more education. On top of the typical nursing school course work, BSN students must also take courses in theory, community health, research, and management. This additional education has proven to provide baccalaureate prepared nurses with increased critical thinking skills, lower mortality rates, and greater leadership skills. On the other hand, ADN programs “...consist of a balance between general education and clinical nursing courses” (Creasia, 2011). Associate degree nurses enter the workforce prepared for technical and secondary care settings. Given the differences and…

BSN Essential VII is about clinical prevention and population health. Acute care and disease-based care are very important in nursing practice but on their own are inadequate for improving health. One of the main parts of nursing practice is health promotion and disease prevention across the lifespan that is why nurses need to be knowledgeable in growth and development. Also, nurses need to know evidence-based clinical prevention practices to provide best care. Practicing health promotion, disease and injury prevention nurses assist individuals, families, communities, and populations to prepare for as well as to minimize health consequences of emergencies. As society’s pushing for a demand in higher education, we are seeing the requirements for nursing increase as well. As most facilities are phasing out the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), the Associates degree RN is becoming the entry level of nursing. Many facilities are already requiring a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree for nurses before even considering them for hire. I feel one of the major setbacks in nursing is its lack of educational requirements. Often times the nurse being the primary care giver is the least educated in the patients’ healthcare team. As of right now, the Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree is not a requirement for bedside nursing. It isn’t until recently that the push for the BSN has become more prevalent.…

To obtain a Nursing Degree one can start at the LVN or go all the way to a PHD in nursing. This paper will focus on the abilities or competencies of a prepared Associate Degree nurse, and the abilities or competencies of a Baccalaureate Degree Nurse. This is a hot topic now and has been for many years. I have been hearing for many years that ADN will be phased out, and only BSN will be used in the future. The time period in which to mandate this event is governed differently by the state where the nurse works. There are catchy phrases out there like BNS in 10, or BSN by 2020. “As of 2010, at least 18 states, including New York, New Jersey, were considering BSN in 10 legislation.” (nursing link 2011, 07.)…

Why one makes a choice ADN or BNS is clearly stated: not enough time, family obligations, any change in pay for the same responsibilities, and getting a Bachelors degree in another field is appealing to some. There is not enough credit given to the doors that a BSN degree opens for a nurse. There is not enough encouragement or incentives from the employer to the ADN to pursue a higher education.…

In today’s nursing world, more is expected from a nurse than following doctor’s orders, administering medications and starting IVs. The nurse must be able to make critical decisions about a patient’s care, to question the doctor if orders seem inappropriate and educate a patient and a family. These skills take an education that is broad based, one that includes critical thinking and exposure to many different people, thought processes, and culture and societal norms. Nurses are prepared in two different educational backgrounds, the baccalaureate degree level of nursing and the associate-degree level of nursing. ADN and BSN graduates are both required to take and pass the NCLEX licensing exam before they can practice as a nurse. Even though both degrees train students to perform the same duties as a nurse there are some differences between the two programs. Nursing organizations recommend that nursing candidates get a four-year Bachelor of Science degree. According to The Future of Nursing, “Nurses must be prepared to meet diverse patients; needs; function as leaders; and advance science that benefits patients and capacity of health professionals to deliver safe, quality patient-centered care.”…

The BSN nurse takes additional classes in humanities, community health nursing, and extensive amount of expanded course work. The program is a bridge to a Master’s degree program and beyond. The ADN program is often not recognized by higher level learning institutions. Faculty qualifications in the BSN programs are usually higher than the ADN programs. The AACN stresses that “baccalaureate-prepared nurses are providers, designers, and managers of care in a dramatically changing health care system and their education should include an increased emphasis on economics, epidemiology, genetics, gerontology, global perspectives, and telecommunications.” (AACN, 1998)…
