In this book, the author talks about the challenges of raising African children in a foreign country. I can personally relate to the topics discussed in the book. Born and raised in Ghana, my culture and beliefs defines 95% of me. I lived in Ghana till the age of 14, when I was asked to join my parents here in the United States. Everything is so different here, one of the…
There used to be a time where white people thought having African American blood in your family was wrong. It was thought of as a shame to your family or a disgrace to the name. Kate Chopin tells a story about a wife and husband who have a new child. Desiree, a white orphan that was adopted by the Valmonde family, is enthralled about the arrival of her baby boy and her husband Armand, a strict slave owner is also excited to see his first born son. However, the family begins to realize that something is mysteriously wrong with the newborn. They begin to notice that he is acquiring the traits of an African American and soon the couple start to narrow down the possibilities of the situation. In the story “Desiree’s Baby”, Kate Chopin uses symbolism and foreshadowing to portray that there is something eccentric about the baby and creates a mysterious plot that keeps the audience looking out for these clues.…
“Babies” is a documentary written by Thomas Balmes, it was filmed in 2010. This movie is about how babies are raised in different places. The four different countries were the USA, Mongolia, Nigeria, and Japan. In this movie it shows that all four of the countries have something in common, but they all have their own rituals at the same time, also in every culture there are things that make me happy but also things that some find to be disturbing.…
The documentary Consuming Kids provided me with so much information about the effects of media on kids. I was very surprised that products and shows that cover education materials does not improve children learning ability, but damage them in a way. As they mentioned, it actually will take away their imagination, attentive and kids’ ability to learn. The media strategic of manipulative using education to lure kids and their parents to making them think it alright for kids to watch education programs because it has the learning system, but in reality, those shows are just influencing the kids to buy their products. The negative impact that media is contributing not only to kids’ health (physically and mentally), but in a deep sense…
This documentary is about eight women that share their experiences of what they have faced in their careers. It opens by one of the actresses saying that this industry is male dominated, and all opportunities are given priority to males then females. Another actress discusses in the documentary that the pay is lower for females and higher for males. In certain cases, females have to live off that allowance until they get a new cast. Other females take even lower pay just to have that role in the “show or movie.” Further, another actress discuss that they have faced discrimination in certain point of their careers for instance; in order to participate in a new cast, they have to be a certain ethnicity, age, height, weight, and physical appearance. Also some of the older actresses mentions that the older an actress get the less and less job opportunities they have for job openings.…
Shock, disbelief and terror were just enough for a country to be flipped upside down. The attacks on the United States of America on September 11, 2001 sent the country into a frenzy about the safety of civilians. Both the elected leaders and average citizens were faced to answer the question of who, in their eyes, could be trusted. After the attack, not only were Muslim- Americans suddenly seen as evil by the American people, but a program was initiated which required immigrants from specific countries to register with the government in order to screen for any risks to the nation.…
I could relate to the movie because I also grew up poor. It’s full of incredibly sad circumstances. It’s sad to see families, or anyone really, living in a homeless shelter. It’s sad that in a country where there is so much excess, anyone has to be homeless. It is truly depressing when a person, especially a child, sees other people have nice, clean things and eating food, food that is a special treat for a poor person. The ridicule and humiliation that stem from material items are sadly inherent of our culture. All of the children seemed wise beyond their ages. I believe this is one of the many effects of poverty on children. I don’t fully believe in the idea that people make their own circumstances. Children definitely have no control over their circumstances, and their childhood is going to shape the adults they become.…
As a practitioner, the Early Years foundation stage states that I should “support babies and children to develop a positive sense of their own identity and culture” and that I should “value and respect all children and families equally”…
There are many cross-cultural similarities such as in Ainsworth’s Uganda study she observed various universals in attachment behaviour. This study showed that infants in Uganda were similar to infants in the UK and USA because they used their mothers as a secure base for exploration, and mothers of securely attached infants showed more sensitivity towards their infants than those who were insecurely attached.…
Early care-giving is a major factor for a child to feel secure to explore the world around them (Carbonell, Alzate, Bustamente & Quiceno , 2002). How different is this early care-giving between two cultures such as the United States and Colombia? This is a look at the differences and similiaries of raising girls, both born in 1988, in Colombia and the United States. Both girls were raised in nuclear families, with one older sibling, close enough in age to be a major part of each girl's daily life. One was raised in Colombia, although she moved to the United States at the age of eleven, while the other was raised completely in the United States. Both parents of each girl were interviewed as well as the girl herself.…
While growing up, children all across America were told, “Remember, it is better to start while you're young.” including me. Does this include starting off obese when we are younger too? Many more times than I possibly could have imagined I have seen an obese child. While watching the documentary Fed Up, couldn’t help but think to myself, “Has the world really changed so much throughout the time of my Grandparents.” I went and asked them if obesity even existed when they were my age. My grandpa’s response was, “Back there was the war to worry about. Kids worked on the farm before and after school. There was no time to go and get a burger whenever we felt like. Time was money and we didn’t have very much of either.” Ever since 1997, when George…
One key aspect that makes a movie enjoyable is being able to relate to it. There are many things that someone can learn or relate to in the movie Parenthood. It has many good, engaging points in the movie while also being funny and enjoyable. Every person is different, so everybody relates to movies differently. Im sure everyone can relate to Parenthood in at least one way. There are three scenes, or points, of the movie that I can really relate to. I can relate to Parenthood in the way that Gil and Karen raised there kids, the rollercoaster story told by the grandma, and the final scene of the movie in the hospital.…
The documentary “Medicated Child” shows how there is a lack of knowledge on how to diagnose and treat children with Bi Polar Disorder. Early on before proper research was done, children were often diagnosed with ADHD instead of the proper BI Polar diagnosis. This can be attributed to the fact that the symptoms are so similar. Doctors often feel treatment of such disorders can only be treated by medications, however, some psychologists believe that there are other methods that can be used. They do not want children to be on so many daily medications.…
Throughout my time spent here in Spain, I have found the cross-cultural similarities and differences of child-rearing practices to be an extremely interesting area of study. Comparatively the families of the American and Spanish societies have quite different methods of raising a child and introducing him or her to this world. What is and what is not socially acceptable is the only differing area when looking at any two cultures side-by-side. Certain things that are considered normal for the Spanish culture are looked at as odd from an American perspective; along with the opposite existing when the Spanish people examine American culture. The things that are taught to children living in Africa compared to those that live in America differ much more widely but still serve the same purpose. The different cultures contribute the exact same thing to each respective society in the long-run, a new productive member of each society.…
