This was partly due to Nancy Sinatra’s song “These Boots Are Made for Walkin” (“How”). Prior to this time period boots were more of a necessity than a fashion choice. Just as the British Invasion had infused prints so did the music of the 70’s. One such print was Tie Dye which was made popular by Jimi Hendrix who wore tie-dye shirts while performing (“Top”). Let’s not forget the disco era and the polyester jumpsuits, hot pants and low necklines. From hippie to foxy momma music had a major effect on fashion.
One thing that the British Invasion and the music had in common was celebrity influence. Let’s face it musicians were famous and many celebrities started some of the fashion trends. For example, the Osmond’s with their fringing, platforms, glittering lurex trousers (“1970s”). David Bowe’s alter ego, Ziggy Stardust, skewed thought about gender and fashion when he wore leotards and foil flares (see figure 3). Ziggy Stardust. Digital image. Marie Claire.
