The Bachelorette Analysis
Leah Block made a sincere apology for tweeting for about Rachel Lindsay’s season 13 of The Bachelorette after social media users picked holes in her comments, calling it racist.
The Bachelor alum threw an offensive joke about the diverse cast during the Monday, June 20, episode of the ABC dating show. “I’m sitting here watching @BacheloretteABC and my roommate just sat down on the couch and said, ‘What is this? @LoveAndHipHop_? DEAD,” she tweeted.
Black deleted the offensive tweet.
Lindsay, 31, who is the first black Bachelorette to hit the show, replayed, “Let me know if she wants to meet Lee…they sound like they would have a lot in common #ihavetimetoday.” Lindsay's tweet implied a bitter reference to one of her suitors Lee Garrett, who

"The tweet came from a place that humoured the failure of representation of minorities in reality TV and belittled the significance of Rachel's presence on the show.”
She also said that she is aware of the passive and childish action, "I acknowledge that entertaining this kind of humor is a passive and careless action that stifles the progress the black community has made in television and continue to make in this industry,” she continued. "It is vitally important to prioritise these experiences and help destroy the oppressive forces that threaten minority communities. My tweet did neither of those things, and I see that as a personal failure.”
As the bachelorette who captured Ben Higgins heart received backlash from her original tweet, she admitted to being defensive while addressing certain responses, "The attacks directed at me felt to be responses to the epidemic of injustice we have towards individuals of marginalised identities — especially the black community,” she said. "I accept responsibility for my ignorance, and as I move forward I will engage in these issues — so I can become an informed ally who would never consider that tweet to be funny in the first

At the time of that Christmas dinner, things were beginning to look up for the Ramseys. For all their wealth, they'd had their share of misfortune. Patsy had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1994, and for a time had been bald because of chemotherapy. In January 1992, John Ramsey's daughter, Elizabeth Ramsey (from a previous marriage) was killed in a car wreck. So, as the Ramseys sat down to dinner at Fleet White's house on…

Katherine Dunn’s Geek Love is the tale of an oddly sensational traveling freak show called the Binewski Carnival Fabulon. The show, run by Aloysius (Al) and Crystal (Lil) Binewski, ultimately is hit with hard times due to some of the performers shortcomings so Al “decided to breed his own version of freaks” (Dunn 7) in order to insure they would not have any more issues with such behaviors. Or as Al so loving recalled: “before I even dreamed you, my dreamlets!” (Dunn 6). Not only was the creation of their children considered a means to provide for the family but also as described by Lil "...the idea of inherited security was ingrained from her childhood, "What greater gift could you offer your children than an inherent ability to earn a living just by being themselves?" (Dunn 7). Throughout each of Lil’s pregnancies Al would concoct various cocktails for her to take. The cocktails…

She wanted to inform the readers as well as state her opinion on the matter. Her writing was very straightforward. You could not be confused as to where her argument was going. She explicitly addresses in the last paragraph of her article that “it is hard to square economic reality or self-interest with support for Trump.” The only time she used humor was when she stated that Trump most likely made “white Christians feel they can once again be in the cultural driver’s seat.” That statement weakened her credibility. It was a statement that generalized white Christians and put them all in one tight group. The majority of her article was unbiased whereas that certain sentence reflexed how she thought Trump supporters were like even if one could argue for or against her generalization. Overall, it was a very solid article with clear logic reasoning to support her stance that the statement of economic downfall being one of the main reasons that citizens are voting for Trump is inaccurate. If she didn’t write her feelings about Trump supporters at the end then this would have been a great…

Her unfiltered approach goes along with the ideas of the modern feminist comedian, which I would definitely consider her to be. She also spoke a lot about poop, which going along with sex, is another thing our society tells us is not what women like to discuss. Essentially, while Tyler did not discuss being a female comedian, and the hardships that come with it, directly, she definitely, even if unconsciously, made it a point to prove that she is not your stereotypical woman, or African American, or African American…

Television network ABC Family’s breakout comedy series, Modern Family, is a show full of life lessons and hidden meanings. Most television shows nowadays are all about sex, alcohol, and the dramas that occur because of them. Modern Family is not an exception, however it focuses more on the family aspect of life’s many dramas. On the surface, it is similar to the sex and drugs filled television shows that consume the media these days, but underneath that surface each episode has a moral to be learned, and the show overall represents many different assumptions America makes on what a “typical” family is.…

The 24th statement, for example, is still at large. Not only is the typical "person in charge" pictured as someone "white," but a "white" male at that. Another example, number ten states that “I can be pretty sure of having my voice heard in a group in which I am the only member of my race.” I think that when a minority gets up to speak in certain situations, either a lot of attention is focused on them because people are curious as to what the “Black” or “Asian” person will say, not necessarily because they are genuinely interested, but more because they are kind of gawking at this person. I think this also ties in with number 27, where she says “I can go home from most meetings...feeling somewhat tied in, rather than isolated, outnumbered, unheard...”…

Her speech is structured into four sections, she anticipates the opposition straight away, opening by explaining that she is not going to say what her listeners expect. She does this with a rhetorical question, and asks two questions one after the other to create interest for her audience. She then answers both questions with a one word sentence, ‘No.’ This therefore has impact, and shoots down any opposition or preconceived ideas of what she would say or think in one clear word. She explains as soon as she opens what she is setting out to say, ‘I am saying that…’…

Rachel’s sentence structure and word choice is simple. Neither her speech nor thoughts are complicated. Her language may be simple, but these simple thoughts are very strong. Her tone is distinguishing. It portrays her character as “materialistic, racist, selfish, vain, and shallow” (Strehle). For example her attitude towards different cultures can easily be portrayed in statements such as “This [Africa] is not a christian type of place...stick out your elbows, and hold yourself up.” (Kingsolver 517). And since the natives “don’t have the same ethics as us” she doesn’t care about their outcomes (Kingsolver 426). Rachel’s diction and tone associated with it makes it hard for the reader to credit any pathos towards her cause.…

I liked how you highlighted the two important ideas in Valentin’s work “Sex and the City Voters, My Ass.” As what she discussed, even though women’s opinion and feelings about politics are being dismissed, it should not be a reason for them to just ignored and not engaged in politics. Valentin also reviewed the large number of women who did not participate in the elections. They can really make a big difference if they voted and were engaged in politics. Women can possess power, but they have to exercise them according to Michel Foucault’s definition of power. Women can definitely have power, but it is not easy to achieve if they are not taking any actions about it. Women such as Victoria Woodhull, Hillary Clinton, and Shirley…
