Known to be inherently vicious and one of the only dogs to have locking jaw, were once one of America’s favourite dogs. Unpredictable and can never be trusted are just some more misconceptions of this well behaved dog. This breed is called a Pit Bull. Pit Bulls are not a breed but dogs put in to a category based on their appearances. Those who fall into this category should have a big head with a short, square muzzle, brindle in colour, large in size, muscular build, docked tails and many more characteristics. The thing is, some of these are not even common to Pit Bulls (Pit Bull University). Pit Bulls are the most misunderstood dogs in today’s society and things don’t seem to be lighting up. The breed should not be banned because it is not…
According to statistical data posted on Barkpost.com, pit bulls are the #1 shelter intake dog and the #1 most frequently euthanized dog in shelters for no other reason than overcrowding. Each year, 1.2 million dogs are euthanized in this country and of those 1.2 million, approximately 40% of them are pit bulls (Moore). Only 1 in every 600 pit bulls in this country will find a loving home (Prasad). Advocates, rescue groups, shelters and animal rights groups like the ASPCA are likely unable to be completely objective when it comes to these dogs who they often see abused, mistreated and dumped at their shelters only to ultimately die due to overcrowding. The emotional toll these workers must endure is unimaginable. However, as a pit bull owner myself, I worry when an uninformed or neutral audience is not given the full picture on something like the responsibility of caring for such a controversial pet. I cringe when I see pit bull puppies intentionally misidentified as “easier” breeds such as Labrador retrievers or boxer mixes in an attempt to find homes for less adoptable puppies labeled as pit bulls. I myself, was led to believe by my rescue group that I was adopting a vizsla mix puppy. As the owner of a purebred vizsla, I…
For many years the media have falsely revealed the pitbull as a bloodthirsty monstrous, normally more dangerous than other strong breeds of dog. However, Pitbull’s are the dog of choice for irresponsible breeders, dog-fighters, people who want a tough-looking dog…
People will always believe what they see or hear on the news, fact or fiction. Some people are firm believers that a pit bull is the best breed of dog to own. Pit bulls are very loyal, energetic, and playful. A huge misconception about a pit bull is that they make a good guard dog, this is not true. Pit bulls are very “people loving” and seek attention from everyone,…
Dogs are great companions and ball of joy dogs are called a man’s best friend. Some people might love and care for them but, other might use them to fight and kill for fun and money. Pit bulls are stereotype and feared mostly by non-dog’s owner from stories they’ve heard. This has made them into the most feared dogs. The truth behind Pit bulls are, they are the most loving dog that will lick you to death. They are normally known for their courage and energy, which makes welled trained dogs. Being a Pit-bull owner myself they will show you unconditionally love as soon as you walk in…
Despite this common opinion, an experiment was once performed. Fifty Pit Bulls were rescued from a fighting ring. Forty nine of the fifty dogs were rehabilitated. Some went to shelters such as Best Friends and many are well-loved family members today. The testing used to determine these dogs' ability to fit into society was exhaustive, extensive, and carefully carried out. Pit Bulls are different from other dogs and potential owners need to be made aware of the facts before considering rescuing or purchasing one. For example, a dog lover who has had Bichons all her life will be sorely surprised unless she does her homework and understand the bully breeds. Pits need a lot of structure, a very pronounced human alpha, training, exercise and lots of attention. The owner needs consistency, time, energy and quite possibly some…
Pit Bulls have always been naturally submissive, confident, and have all the makings of a loyal family dog. The continued misunderstandings of this breed perpetuates the fear our society has for it, and “with unfailing optimism the dogs that fill our shelters and homes seem to want to remind us that they are what we have made them to be, either victims of human cruelty, neglected sentries…
Around the early 80’s Pitbull’s followed their small companions all over, Pitbull owners and the public eye noticed this and the love for Pitbull’s grew. everyone stated labeling the Pitbull as a loving, stable breed and soon named them the nanny dog! In the early 90’s Out of nowhere pit bulls were recognized for having a so-called flip of a switch behavior, said “(www.alternet.org)”. Attack after attack in news headlines lead the breed onto a dark road, labeling pits as monsters followed by horror stories of lock jaw incidents and even death scenarios. As of September 2014, no states have enacted breed-specific laws, BSLs Banning pit bulls. However, there are over 700 U.S. cities in 40 states that have enacted these bans.” According to “(www.Reference.com)” because of certain situations.…
When you see a Pit bull, what is the first thing that goes through your mind? For some, it is a sense of fear and for others it is the thought that this breed is misunderstood. Have you ever stopped and thought about if the Pit bull breed is really a vicious breed, or are they just misinterpreted due to the reputation that others have given them along with the many myths that are attached to them? What about the owners of these precious animals? Do you ever think that they are the reason that their Pit bull may be a vicious dog? Many times people speculate too much when it comes to the Pit bull breed. Instead of taking the time to learn about them, they would much rather allow the myths and things they hear through the media to set…

American motivational speaker Wayne Dyer once said, “Judgments prevent us from seeing the good that lies beyond appearances.” (Dyer, 2012). This quote holds true in relation to the public’s perception of “pit bull” type dogs. Pit bulls are often judged by their muscular bodies, large head, and strong jaws. Pit bulls are consistently portrayed in the media as aggressive as well. Because of this, pit bulls face a variety of different obstacles to overcome. From breed specific legislation (BSL), to dog fighting, to homelessness and euthanasia, the list of obstacles to overcome may seem impossible. However, “Experts say that five factors affect a dog 's tendency to bite: owner quality (quality of care, level of supervision provided); degree to which the dog has been habituated to people; training received (level and type); behavior of the victim; and genetic predisposition to be dangerously aggressive” (Pet Owner Liability, 2001).Only through education on the true nature of the breed and promotion of responsible ownership can pit bulls be helped.…
Pit Bulls are not the wild, vicious and inherently dangerous breed that some people put them out to be. A Pit Bull can be a loving household pet just like any other breed of dog, it also does a lot of help to the society. After stating these facts about Pit Bulls, are you now aware of the good in the Pit Bull breed and how you cannot always judge a breed by the way it…
but soon became used as house pets due to their friendliness toward people. These facts in themselves should open up people’s eyes to the Pit Bull Breed not being an…
People say pit-bulls are dangerous and that they are monsters; however, humans are the real danger and the real monsters. Pit-bulls should not be blamed for their owners mistakes; therefore, people should not blame an entire dog breed for the few who have been trained to be aggressive and mean. The owners should be at fault, not the breed of the dog; the breed’s owners have raised them to be aggressive and mean. Although, in certain people’s opinions, they are mean to others, but they are actually great dogs to have as pets. Humans have always been the real monster in these situations, yet most people do not see it that way. Society sees only the worst, they will notice when pit-bulls fight with others dog’s or act aggressively towards a human; however, they never blame the owner. There are owners out there that train their dogs to protect them or be aggressively with others dog’s; thus, due to their idiotic move, society looks…
