The Bass The River And Sheila Mant Summary
Carlie Hansen Due Date: Friday 25th
Journal 1

I am reading “The Bass, the River, and Sheila Mant” by W. D. Wetherell. This story is about a fourteen-year-old boy crushing over a seventeen-year-old girl, he has to choose over her or a bass. In this journal I will be questioning who he picks.

The main question I have for this story is, will the narrator pick Sheila or the bass? One option he has is to pick the bass. He has always had a big passion for fishing. The fish he had hooked was one of the biggest catchiest of his life. He was doing everything at that point for the fish, without Sheila knowing. He was more focused on the fish then he was with Sheila. Sheila was trying to talk to him but his mind went all to thinking of the fish. The other option he has is to pick Sheila. He has always had a huge crush on Sheila. He would take time out of his day to watch every move she would do, sometimes he would watch her tan or go swimming. The narrator

In the story ‘The Bass, the River, and Sheila Mant” the narrator was in love with Sheila Mant. He had always wanted to go out with her but never had the guts to do it. He finally one day got the nerve to ask her out on a date. Well they were on the date nothing went the way he wanted it to. When they got to the band and were ready to leave Sheila told the narrator she was going home with another boy. I connected to this because it had happened to me. I have always had a crush on one of my really good friends named Keegan but I don’t think he catches on. He has always been a very gentleman like with me. He is very nice and good-looking in my opinion. We were both invited to the same party and we met up there. A little later that night he left early to go hangout with other girls. Everyone asked me if I was mad, but I tried not showing my feelings. Both the narrator and I have gotten rejected so, I can relate to how he

Throughout the course of the marking period, two books that I have read really stood out above all others. They are Dogsong and The River, both written by the same author, Gary Paulsen. This is the most obvious similarity between the two books but there are much more. They both have a teenage boy as their main character and are both about a boy embarking on an expedition. These are the general similarities, but there are also many differences between them. Now let’s go deep into each book and look at some of their unique aspects.…

The major claim in McEwen’s article is how the river restoration of the Salmon in the San Joaquin River might be both a good and bad idea. “The fish” are exceptionally vulnerable to climate change.” McEwen is explaining both sides or both outcomes that might happen if the river restoration does or does not happen and he even brings in the experts from UC Davis that study California's rapidly declining Salmon population. This is important to see because even though McEwen has a opinion nothing beats cold, hard facts.…

In the beginning of his book he utilizes characterization to connect the reader to the fishermen and townspeople. “She’s a tall blonde who inspires crushes in the teenaged sons of some of her friends,” describes Junger, “but there’s a certain no-nonsense air about her that has always kept Bobby on his toes” (7). The way Junger describes Christina, Bobby Shatford’s girlfriend, sounds as if he knew her at the time. This use of pathos makes Junger a much more effective and believable…

    1. In our family, there was no clear line between religion and fly fishing. We lived at the junction of great trout rivers in western Montana, and our father was a Presbyterian minister and a fly fisherman who tied his own flies and taught others. He told us about Christ's disciples being fishermen, and we were left to assume, as my brother and I did, that all first-class fishermen on the Sea of Galilee were fly fishermen and that John, the favorite, was a dry-fly fisherman.…

As I am reading the story, I wonder if the narrator will pick the bass or Sheila. I think the boy will pick the fish. The reason I think he will pick the fish is because it’s his favorite pass time. When he’s not watching Sheila he’s fishing. It’s like his second nature, he knows all kinds of things about fishing he’s been fishing since he was just a little boy. He knows the sound of a fish when it jumps out of the water,…
