Film Analysis of “The Battle of Algiers” Throughout history, human beings have experienced thousands of large and small wars. We can perceive the essence of human society through those wars, power is always the blasting fuse of every kind of war. Power is like a piece of bread that attracts hungry human beings to fight for it. The film, “The Battle of Algiers”, reconstructed the distressing scene during the Algerian War of Independence. The Algerians’ militant organization, National Liberation Front, unites with the Algerians to fight against French government’s control. Ultimately, this is a battle of power between two groups. In this film analysis, I would like to use the power theory and the intergroup conflict theory to analyze the conflict in the film. Their behaviors activated the battle. The Algerians and French’s sentiments fanned the flames of the battle. In the film, every face is filled with thousands of emotions. Those eyes tell us their regret, fear,sadness and sorrow. There are also some unreadable expressions with so many profound emotions. All the individuals’ sentiments unite together to be the sentiments of the countries. Those sentiments are too strong to be control. There is a scene in the film: the explosion happens in a French racecourse; a lot of French are injured; French are so angry that they hit a little boy to abreact their mood. Throughout the film, people’s negative sentiments, such as hate and suspicion, instigate them to do things, which are against humanity. In the war, people are cruel, because people don’t feel security and happy in the environment. Under the war’s pressure for a long time, people can easily lose their mind.
