It took place in the pacific theatre of WW2. This fight was remembered for its first action in which aircraft carries matched against each other.
In early May 1942, the Japanese despatched an invasion fleet from Rabaul to take Port Moresby, Papua. They also sent a carrier force &to patrol into the Coral Sea to intercept any American carriers sent to thwart their planned attack. As an attempt to improve in the South Pacific their defensive position, Japan chose to attack Port Moresby in New Guinea and Tulagi.

In a result they sent 2 United States Navy carrier task force and a Australian U.S cruiser force to oppose the offensive. On the 3rd and 4th May, The Japanese forces succeeded in invading and occupying Tulagi. In a surprise alot of their supporting warships were sunk and damaged in a surprisingly attack by aircraft from the US fleet carrier Yorktown. Now that they knew the U.S was in the area, Japanese fleet carriers went to the Coral sea with the intention of finding and taking down the Allied naval forces. As it began on 7 May, the carrier forces from both of the sides fought in airstrikes for 2 full days. From the first day, the United States took down the Japanese light carrier, although as an counter attack, Japan took down a U.S destroyer and damaged a fleet oiler. The day after, the Japanese fleet carrier had a colossal damage and the United States fleet carrier was damaged aswell, as well as Yorktown.
