In the novel the storm hit the Everglades where Janie and her husband Tea Cake live in. Janie and Tea Cake were with each other when the water came towards them. They both were holding onto a roof, then Janie couldn’t hold on any longer and sailed away. She saw a cow in the water so she tried to swim to the cow and she held on to it. Janie was accompanied by a dog that was on top of the cow as well. Tea Cake swam to Janie so he can save her. The dog bite Tea Cake on the cheek and three weeks later they realized the dog had rabies. Hushpuppy was at her dad’s house while the storm was happening. She was scared and worried about the legendary Aurochs that prey on the weak. After the storm her dad became ill and weak, so Hushpuppy started to worry a lot. She became even more afraid because the Aurochs were going to come after her dad. They both stayed in their homes during the storms because they thought it was nothing to be concern about. In the end of the storms both protagonists have their loved ones ill and are afraid to lose them in the end. Janie and Hushpuppy are free-spirited and aren’t afraid to state their opinions. They both grew up without their mothers who left them with their dad or grandma. The storms resulted in losing their love ones to an illness.
