Homework 2: Cover Songs
A cover song is a recording of a song that was originally recorded or made popular by somebody else. I realized many music artists have covered Beatles’ songs. So, the song I chose for this assignment is “Blackbird” performed originally by The Beatles. For the cover version, I chose Kenny Rankin’s “Blackbird” cover version.
The Beatles were an English rock band formed in Liverpool in 1960. The band consisted of four members: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. He was born on February 10, 1940 and passed away on June 7, 2009. Rankin’s interpretation of “Blackbird” that he recorded for his Silver Morning Album impressed Paul McCartney. So, Paul asked Rankin to perform his version of the song when McCartney and Lennon were inducted into the Song Writer’s Hall of Fame.
The original “Blackbird” song and the cover version are unique in their own way. I enjoyed listening to both songs because they are very different. Paul McCartney used a double-tracked lead vocal, acoustic guitar, tape loops, and percussion. The instrumentation also consists of the sound of birds chirping in the background and also the light tapping of McCartney’s foot used as percussion and rhythm.

The vocals in Rankin’s version are stronger and the song is a bit louder. Another difference is that Rankin’s version is 3:03 minutes long and McCartney’s is 2:18 minutes long making the difference approximately 50 seconds. Also, McCartney’s version seemed to be played at a faster tempo than Rankin’s. Both recordings of the song “Blackbird” have their own unique sound and
