Gordon. For the for time, Esther explains that she felt scared, and didn 't know what was happening to her. She tried to write a letter to her friend Doreen but when she picks up the pen she can 't make out anything but scribbles. Esther has strong opinions of Dr. Gordon as she doesn 't think anything can cure her. After a few appointments he decides to give her electrotherapy which she describes as being extremely painful. She begins to lose hope in being saved or finding a way out of this dark tunnel. When she decides to attempt to commit suicide she takes the action very delicately. She has begun to think of herself as hopeless and worthless, she feels there is nothing left in life for her. She continues at attempting suicide by drowning herself however she is unsuccessful. "Then I saw that my body had all sorts of little tricks, such as making my hands go limp at the crucial second, which would save it, time and again, whereas if I had the whole say, I would be dead in a flash" (Plath, 130). When Esther decides to visit her dads graveyard you begin to see the pain she still feels from her fathers death. "My mother hadn 't let us come to his funeral because we were only children then, and he had died in the hospital, so the graveyard and even his death had always seemed unreal to me" (Plath, 135). Unfortunately, Sylvia Plath committed suicide at a young age while battling depression. Depression is a mysterious mental illness because it can happen suddenly and take over someones world immediately. Mood disorders cause people to feel up and down and can trigger at any moment based on a thought, sound, or image. Constant psychotherapy along with medication is valid treatment for this disorder, however the person diagnosed must want the help. This terrible illness is experienced by many all over, and its amazing how people are able to work through it. Although Esther knew she was better, she also knew that her mood could change at any point, and the bell jar could lower once again.
