Not belonging can be hard to deal with especially when you are somewhere or with someone that you are not used to. This can have an affect on the individual’s understanding of themselves and their world. In the poem ‘Migrant Hostel’ by Peter Skrzynecki, the individual hasn’t seen the world or felt a sense of connection because of where he lives. ‘Migrant Hostel’ is about Peter living in the hostel right after he has moved from Germany to Australia. At the beginning of the poem, the tone is solemn which allows the reader see his sense of not belonging to the hostel. The collective “newcomers” coming and living in the hostel highlights the fact that Peter lacks individual identity. In the third stanza, the “weather” is used as a metaphor for the unpredictability each day had in stall for the migrants. This means that they had no control over their lives and therefore can’t gain a sense of belonging. In the final stanza, the “barrier at the main gate” is used as a physical symbol which prevents Peter and the migrants from seeing the outside world and alienates them from the rest of the world. This prevents Peter and the other migrants from gaining a sense of belonging. This poem shows that an individual can sometimes not broaden and deepen their own understanding of themselves and of their world.…

The piano melody of the song is very repetitive and only varies when it becomes more syncopated at A5(1:19). The vocal melody for the line ‘Why does my heart feel so bad’ ascends and then descends, reflecting a person’s tone in a question and answer. There is also a counter melody provided by the synth strings and piano, which engages in call and response with the main vocal melody at A6.…

"Home" is thought of as a physical being, but in these essays, home is a feeling; a feeling of comfort and love which come in many shapes and sizes. "Home" can be brought on by sights, smells and most important, the memories of those senses. Ford shows that the most important aspects of feeling at "home" is "the important place that holds you, always meant that: affection, love" (110). He says this before he tells us about how he and his wife were broken down in Nebraska in the late 70's and his wife says, "I've just gotten so sleepy now. I've got to go home and sleep." "Home?" Ford says... His wife laughs, "Just back to the motel. Where else?" (110). Home is where this couple is making it. They are broken down in the hottest time of the year away from their house, yet still feel that warm feeling of "home."…

Nahan by Nonon Baang, Baritone. Lyrics by Levi Celerio and Music by Ernani Cuenco. The song is heartwarming to listen and interesting with its portrayal about love. The combination of the piano and the voice of the man are really good that it doesn’t have any lack of other instruments in the song. The lyrics are good and go well with the music, and the vocal melody is nice, simple, and effective. The playing of the piano in the introduction of the song is relaxing. The quality of the voice suits really well to the type of song and the music. Everything is balance without overpowering each other. The lyrics are about the feelings that have been changed and reminisce the love they had. The transitions and overall atmosphere of the sound is played well. The song says everything what love is all about but something isn’t there. An appealing atmosphere is like the auditory description of love in between which goes from the lyrics that reflects the song. An overall knack to make interesting and seamless transitions is good. Predominately solid piano playing with the exceptional voice grabs me and the rest of it never disconnects me from absorption into the music. The singer's voice is very soothing, and the lyrics are on the whole interesting, and capable of invoking rich imagery in my imagination. The melody of the vocals are not out of synch, but there is something that leads me to believe that the singer has enough raw potential as it is to try and take what he's doing to another level. If the vocal melodies could be more refined, the overall sound would be much closer to completion. The lyrics themselves don't need as much refining, and the delivery is good, but I feel that the delivery can be more than good. The lyricism was enough for me to catch my attention to the song. In overall the music is very appealing and showcases the meaning that it wants to provide…
